Harry Greb vs. Carlos Monzon 20x20 ring 15 rounds 160-pound weight limit 10 point must scoring system 1940's to 1950's style officiating One things for sure there would be a lot of punches. Could Mozon handle Greb's speed? Could Gerb get past / slip under Monzon's jab to score. I'm not sure how this one would play out.
2 Greb opponents similar in size to Monzon were Tunney & Tommy Loughran (Both excellent opponents). Prime Greb defeated both of them. Greb height 5′ 8″ reach 71″ Tunney height 6′ 0″ reach 76″ Tommy Loughran height 5′ 11½″ reach 73″ Monzon Height: 5′ 11½″ Reach: 76″ Per Tunney post Fight #1: "Greb was never in one spot for more than half a second," said Tunney. "All my punches were aimed and timed properly but they always wound up hitting empty air. He'd jump in and out, slamming me with a left and whirling me around with his right or the other way around. "My arms were plastered with leather and although I jabbed, hooked and crossed, it was like fighting an octopus." ----from Boxing and Wrestling Magazine Oct. 1954-written by Stanley Weston HARRY GREB VS. Hell of a fight here.. I honestly think a lot of Grebs success is due to his awkward movement, windmill attack, fast hands, never in one spot, hard to catch clean, work rate , engine, athleticism.. I don't think boxers knew how to deal with Greb .. And Tunney is a perfect example given his HUGE weight advantage on him and being the "technical boxer himself" … I will say out of any MW in history , I will give Monzon the best chance at beating him.. A fighter in his own right who had his own style, same as Greb, to get the job done..A fighting machine, equal stamina, and so cool, calm and collective … He might just figure Greb out in the championship rounds … 50/50 fight for me
At the highest levels like this a lot comes down to stylistic matchups and since we don't have any footage of Greb, its kind of hard to say. Greb's record is tremendous but Monzon is a stone killer with his own highly developed techniques of taking fighters to pieces.
Exactly. Until we have some found footage of Greb it's just pissing in the wind. With his track record who is to say he wouldn't beat Monzon but with his lack of footage who is to say he would.
Greb takes an early lead over the slow starting Monzon, which I believe Monzon would not be able to rally enough from. Both are true 15 round fighters. Greb decision. Great bout, surprised I've never seen it pondered before. I believe Monzon would fare much better in a rematch ala Tunney.
To beat Monzon at 160 you need speed, stamina, strength and a chin .. he was most vulnerable against the men with speed like a few early rounds against Napoles or against Griffin .. by the endless amount of info out there on Greb including head to head match ups against men with whom there is film we can get a pretty good idea of what Greb was, an exceptionally well conditioned, lighting fast, iron chinned, unorthodox, high volume puncher who was able to stay in the trenches with much bigger men and excel. No doubt Carlos was exceptional but I'd favor Greb by a decision.
Greb is just to unorthodox for Monzon, as a matter a fact nothing has ever been like Greb before or after. This is the one fight he will not be able to control. Greb UD
Tunney was and coming into it …. And if you research the second fight, Tunney already saw Greb AND still had weight on him .. . And lost or drew to him by the vast majority at ringside that fight… just shows you that Greb was on and is on a different level than Tunney
