Covers Benitez' rise to Leonard fight & up to Duran proposed fight.

That it was. "He trained two months for Cervantes," Goyo says. "That was the best he ever trained." While training, he promised his father the $7,500 purse. Goyo recalls, "He told me, I don't want the money, I want to be champion. Make me a champion.' "

That Cervantes fight showed Benitez to be the most promising fighter in the world. It also was the last time Wilfred trained for a fight as if it really mattered. "When I entered boxing I wanted the championship, money, health and women," Benitez says.

Soon, the Lombardi of Saint Just had lost control of his prodigy. While training to defend his title against Cervantes, Wilfred ran his car off the road and wedged it between two trees, leaving the front end hanging over a steep cliff. He was hospitalized briefly, and the fight was canceled. "He's lucky he's still alive," Goyo says."

Incredible to think we rarely saw the best of him and he still won world titles at three weights (back when that actually meant something)!

He burnt too bright, too soon.

Truly incredible, that he won a title at 17 against an opponent better than all of today's p4p resumes.

His father Gregorio really was a piece of ****.

Autistic. Slightly ******ed. He should never have been liscensed. The mind of a 9 yr old at 21. His father should have been imprisoned as a pimp.

Sports Illustrated had absolutely brilliant boxing writing back in the day, before it became too fringe a sport to bother with.

And I hope Gregorio rots in hell, where he belongs.

Pretty sure it was some type of brain damage / concussion condition. Had been sparring people like DeJesus at 15.

I definitely agree he showed autistic like symptoms.

    Typical overreaction from you.

Shouldn't have been licenced in his 1990 comeback when he was shot.

Of course it was proper to license him in his prime

If you took away the license of every fighter who was stupid outside the ring,...,...

Gregorio used him, but he wouldn't have gotten where he was without him. We probably would have never even heard of Wilfred Benitez.

It's similar to Tennis, where fanatatical parents push their prodigies from day one..

    Agassi, the Williams sisters, etc.

    Gregorio went too far, obviously.

Of course in tennis they aren't punching little kids in the head.

    At most matches anyway.

Instead of providing a logical argument, you resort to delusional conspiracies.

I write much more eloquently than the guy you're talking about. I even provided a selfie as my avatar.

    Get help.

Anybody that saw the horror show "Eraserhead " has seen that characters face. Try again mark. That character looks like a lunatic necrophiliac .
