Winding down: a fight not even listed on the card's BoxRec page, between 8-0 (7) prospect Carlos "The Chosen One" Arrieta (who is from Trujillo Alto, with a passionate fan base) and some big wiry tough journeyman. edit: the journeyman's name is Ernesto Sebastian Franzolini.

In the 6th round Franzolini went down from a borderline rabbit punch, and tried milking it for a DQ, on his knees crying like he could not continue. The ref wasn't having it and didn't even penalize Arrieta, but did warn him. Into the final round of this 8-rounder now, and Franzolini is the one landing intentional rabbit punches to bail himself out while Arrieta works him with guard-splitting uppercuts and fast whipping liver shots.

 

Arrieta wins by UD.

 

Wilfredo Méndez vs. Janiel Rivera, 10 rounds @ strawweight

 

"Bimbito" Méndez is the southpaw. "Pototo" Rivera is bigger and has an edge in experience (both quantity and quality) - but is clearly the B-side, as Méndez is the hometown fighter (like Arrieta, he's from Trujillo Alto) plus the defending champ. This is for the WBO NABO minimumweight title, Méndez's first defense.

 

10-8 Méndez

Started out a fairly even round, with Rivera pushing forward, but in the final minute the right jab of Méndez started to dribble inside between the wrists and connect with Pototo's face with regularity, setting up some daredevil in-and-out power salvos by the nimble-footed youngster. Méndez scored a knockdown with a 1-2-1-2, and then continued to ravage his shaky opponent with a series of high left hand leads and right hooks on the body down the stretch.

 

I liked the response from Rivera, to both the knockdown and taunting - he just chuckled and calmly got up, put his chin down, and clocked back into work.

 

Pototo is game but facing a big talent deficit against Bimbito, whose speed and timing are carrying the day although he doesn't seem to have a ton of pop (even for a 105lber)

Méndez is hard to get a bead on, at times slick but at times spastic. His main problem seems to be that he rushes himself too much, and seems to believe he's a bigger puncher than he is.

Still winning handily.
