I think he was "protected" so long because he was a latecomer to boxing and had a very short Amateur career. Needed time to get to grips with things....
I agree with your thought, its a shame the division is weak. until he fights and puts away a number of decent opponents ie Whyte, Pedvetkin, Fury ( he got up ) & AJ we can not clearly see if he is that dangerous. His resume is weak and loaded with old or awful opposition. I do see Wilder fighting differntly against Fury in a rematch, I don't think he will be as nervous of going for it in the rematch as Fury is feather fisted and throws few shots
It is understandable for pugilistic fans to be big on Wilder. Many love to see the brute force of a ko or tko. I am one of those. Wilder has power and carries it throughout a fight. In the Breazeale fight, using the term " fight" loosely, it was impressive for many to see a one round tko/ko. He did get up but could not have continued. So the stoppage was good. I don't like Wilder. I don't like him because of reasons other than boxing. Personality traits etc. While it can be difficult to be objective because of that, I try to be....sometimes. From a boxing perspective, I believe he is highly overrated because of the power in his right hand. See him as a one trick pony. He has little else. Someone mentioned his tenacity due to his belief in his power. Yes, he has that. He has also developed the ability to be patient. These are good traits in the ring and serve a fighter well. However, he is the beneficiary of a weak heavy weight division. the talent pool is not deep. Many fighters are not well conditioned and lack enough skills to present the art as it deserves. Lots of reasons for this. However, I still believe that a well developed boxer with a good skill level, sufficient pop and the ability to stick to a game plan will clean his clock and that will be the end of him. Yes, until then, I am just waiting.
Didn't Fury do that for a majority of the Wilder fight? The only difference from what you said is Fury was robbed on the cards and didn't pick up the ''W''. But Fury did win the fight, completely out boxing Wilder for a vast majority of the contest.
Jamzy...yeah Fury did. You are right. However, Fury lacks the "sufficient pop" that I mentioned. A more complete package would KTFO of Wilder.
That's right. People take records way too seriously at times (mainly AJ fans who go on and on about resumes like it's the be all and end all). They don't mean a hell of a lot. I like Wilder. As Tyson Fury said before their fight he's dangerous right up until the final 2 seconds of a fight with his never say die attitude. I don't care too much about his trash talk. Nothing wrong with trying to build up a fight.
I've also come around to respect him, but still think the Povetkin non-fight was a huge disappointment. Regardless of who was to blame the most, that fight would have really been an interesting and meaningful contest at that time. In my mind, Wilder can get a pass for all his fights against limited opposition if he presses on and fights on a regular basis against the top of the division. It can be argued that both Ortiz and Fury were far from prime when he fought them, and until Wilder does his thing against someone at the top of the division who is in their prime years, there's always going to be questions as to whether he's the real deal or not.
I totally agree, people will go on about all the bums he has fought, and he has fought heaps of bums, but maybe that was what he needed to become one of the best fighters in the world. At the end of the day he has massive power and he mostly always finds a way to land it. What I want to know as a kiwi is what is going on with joe Parker? where is he? will he have some mongrel finally?
