For me Tyson and Ali were one off`s, that kind of charisma doesn`t grow on trees, do fans here feel anyone will develop the fame Tyson had at the peak of his career and notoriety?

I know it's not the same but AJ is huge right now. One of the biggest stars in boxing, I think he's definitely the most known since Tyson

There could be a chosen one along the way. But in terms of ability that both Ali and Tyson had, I don't think we'll see anything like them again. AJ is a big dude with power and Wilder can crack but they're rather ordinary compared to Ali and Tyson.

Of course the media will shine the spot light on some guys and prematurely place them on a pedestal.

I think it could happen. Seems like guys like that come along every 20-30 years or so. It wouldn't surprise me one bit.

Here's the way I break down fame in boxing:

Star (your girlfriend's friends have heard of him) = Marco Antonio Barrera, Bernard Hopkins, Roy Jones Jr., GGG
Super Star (your girlfriend's mom has heard of him) = Canelo, AJ, Oscar De La Hoya
Mega Star (gf's grandma has heard of him) = Manny P., Tyson, Ali, Floyd Mayweather

AJ could definitely cross that threshold into mega star territory. If he kayoed Wilder and then maybe had a trilogy with Fury and rattled of a couple of impressive defenses its hard to predict how big he could get. I think in part his fame will be tethered to the longterm fate of DAZN. Either way, Joshua has a tremendous potential to capture the public's imagination.

Tyson and Ali were globally far more famous than Floyd and Manny, both those guys aren`t really known to the average person here in Britain but Ali and Tyson are still known to older generations here and in their heydays were extremely famous in Britain.

Part B to the question above..... Will there ever be another poster in the classic forum who makes more Tyson threads than Mark?

Since Tyson? I wouldn’t say he’s more well known than Holyfield, Lewis and both Klitschkos. In England he’s probably not even as well known as Bruno and in the US, outside of boxing circles he’s practically unknown to the American public.

I agree as far as the UK is concerned.

You can hardly walk through the city center, without seeing his face on something!

I don't think that Ali or Tyson were unprecedented.

I think that Louis, Dempsey, Sullivan, and perhaps even Tom Cribb were just as big as household figures.

Will there be a fighter with that sort of standing again?

    You bet there will eventually!

    No, I don't think so.

Boxing was a cluster**** when Tyson was boxing, sure, but it's far, far worse now. There will always be multiple champions now - always.

Second, there's no free-to-air boxing in any western country once you have a superstar, really. Your granny will now only see new Mike Tyson stills on the news. That won't captivate anyone. You're literally not allowed to share owned footage on flagship news services without paying. You could watch Tyson-Bruno on a Grandstand special day after.

A guy with Wilder level recognition can make a lot of money waving his belt about now. That guy is wealthy. Net worth about 30 million. He doesn't need to fight anyone he doesn't want to to get money. New Tyson doesn't have to be that way - only two or three of his best opponents do.

Competition is deep and getting deeper. Japanese are going to be less interested because they have captivating monsters like Bob Sapp (for example) in different sports. There are dozens of MMA promotions in different parts of the world all with their monsters, and I wouldn't be surprised if other combat sports started sucking up some heat too. Muay Thai is amazing right now, but we'll wait and see on that.

In essence, Ali-Tyson was a perfect storm of budding globalisation and also came before boxing literally chopped it's own dick off and stuck it up its own ass while lying about it. That's your lot as far as global phenomenon go.

Nah, Africans, Thais, Japanese didn't give a **** about Sullivan and Tom Cribb. Didn't even know who they were, probably, as a society. Japanese and Africans went bonkers for Ali and Tyson.
