Douglas looked really good that night. If he could have kept that form consistently we might have been looking at a champion with many defences. If we're picking this one-off version of Douglas vs Holy, then I'd say that yeah, he had a decent chance of winning. I wouldn't care to put a number on that chance, but it might be close to 50-50.
I think the Tyson version of Douglas against Holy would be a pick-um fight and would come down to who the judges are and the venue of the fight.
We would have seen a FIGHT. Holyfield was a better boxer overall than Douglas, though,so I envisage a clear, albeit competitive decision victory for Evander.
That is exactly my point. Duran and Leonard were not different fighters in June or Nov of 1980 and neither was Douglas. Douglas went down in round 8 and looked at his gloves the same way he did with Evander, and some think it was a long count. Different opponents and styles make for different results. Tyson lost that fight more than Douglas won. Douglas quit against Tucker in 1987.. He lost to Jesse Ferguson whom Tyson destroyed in 1986. Douglas was not great fighter. Mike lost that fight. Douglas was fat from gorging food? So he has an excuse for that loss, but lost to Ferguson, Bey, White and quit with Tucker, so losing to Holyfield was because he gorged on food?
Which is exactly my point on this. Douglas was all but knocked out. I give him credit for beating Mike but not more than that. I think Evander always times him and beats him.
Douglas would have had better wins in his career had it been all about him and motivation.. He was motivated enough to get to the top of boxing and get at title shot..
