Agree he looked different in the ring walk and said I thought it was a bad sign, BUT far more telling for me was POST fight he seemed so happy, as though the weight had been lifted, while showing class in accepting defeat he seemed relieved to me
IF any of this is true, then he'll always need to prove that he can perform outside his comfort zone of the UK. I'd like to see the rematch in Mexico or California.
Povetkin was outboxing and winning on points until father time took hold of his body and soul leaving him ripe to suffer a AJ KO. Ruiz was in his prime with solid fundamentals as well as lightening hands and Joshua was left with no answer. I know Joshua fanboys are fishing for reasons as to why Joshua got exposed, but it[s really simple, he got beat by the superior boxer. Nothing to do with him feeling his unusual self, jetjag, poisoning, wrong boots for ring walk, not enough cuddles or any other make believe sorry excuses. Ruiz is simply the better fighter, the better boxer and the better man.
Here’s the issue - you created the thread but it’s not your “get off my lawn” property to police. You want the discussion to echo your belief that something was ‘wrong’ with AJ and no one should be allowed to say anything contrary or to voice that we see excuse-making. So no I didn’t see a single thing wrong with AJ that wasn’t inflicted by his opponent.
Pre-fight stuff can screw your head up. Look at Tyson prior to Douglas. The Givens stuff screwed him up, hell he was on anti-depressants. In Tyson's camp for Douglas there were a lot of goof ball hanger ons that should not have even been there. AJ did seem more than a little off prior to the fight. Yes, I was surprised by the outcome. After Ruiz fought the Dimetrenko ( sorry for the awful spelling) I was impressed and thought he "could" give AJ some trouble. Never expected anything like this though. Don't want to take anything away from Ruiz with this post. My hat is off to him and my respect is high for his abilities. I don't think it was a premature stoppage. Ruiz did what a champion should do. He beat the other guy and showed tons of heart.
I honestly think he had his doubts about whether he could beat Ruiz, with his speed, style of fighting and Ruis take no prisoners mindset. He knew Ruiz would be trouble and his nightmare became a reality. Also Ruiz was probably even better than he expected,so going into the fight he had a hard time envisioning victory and it showed up in his body language.
People may just be looking too much into nothing, but i have to say i did notice something about him seemed very strange pre fight, during the ring walk and chewing on his mouth piece leaning back on the ropes the look in his eyes, it was very odd, fighters always look somewhat nervous and i am never one to look into these things or face offs etc but for some reason this time around this was really something that stud out to me while i was watching live and it seems many other people picked up on the exact same thing which again is interesting, also the way he was talking between rounds, again very odd, "why am i feeling like this" "what's he going to do next" "what shot did he hit me with " fighters do come out with some strange stuff between rounds but iv'e never had such a bizarre feeling as i have with this fight not just what he was saying the way he was saying it, it was all very strange.
Thanks for the constructive reply. Could well be something to do with it. His nerve did not seem strong pre fight for sure.
Yeah, I just didn’t feel like sitting through all those threads with all the bickering and infighting, so decided to start a receptacle here. Was hoping it would be of use to people like myself who read into the psychology of boxing. Thanks for the response.
I don’t care about where the narrative goes - I was just hoping for considered discussion about it without having to trawl the myriad other threads that were created during the night on the west coast. My attitude towards some of the responses is guided more by just trying to keep things on topic, and not appreciating the partisan trolling - there’s so much of that in the other threads and I just hoped for a decent dialogue with fellow boxing fans. I believed it was relevant to the discussion - particularly in light of what was a big upset. No disrespect to what happened in the ring at all. I have gone to lengths to avoid denigrating anything on either side there.
