Looking for examples of acceptable "Mauling" in boxing non punch aggressive tactics designed to wear an opponent down called sometimes smothering or leaning? Best example i can think of is jack Johnson but the footage is limited and can't be applied to modern boxing. Cheers!
Joe Gans might be even better than Jack Johnson, James J Corbett was very good as well. Like you said, it can't be used in modern boxing. The old boxers pretty much all did wrestling to various degrees. Tom Sharkey actually challenged for a wrestling championship.
Marciano would often smother opponents. He threw a lot of punches but he really wore down a lot of guys by making them work constantly on the inside. Really didn’t give guys much of a breather. Someone already mentioned Jack J those two always come to mind
The story of the "boxing" match between Frank Slavin and Frank Gotch has always amused me. In short, Slavin, into his 40s and well past it took on the top catch wrestler of the time, Frank Gotch in a boxing match. Without looking it up, I think it was 1900 or 1901, and it ended up that Gotch muscled him over the ropes to the outside for a DQ when he couldn't handle Slavin's fists.
Arturo Godoy effectively mauled Joe Louis in their first fight. Tony Galento successfuly mauled too. A very dirty fight must have been Arturo Godoy vs Tony Galento. Henry Armstrong against anybody.
This. Godoy was extremely good at mauling his opponent and giving them no space to work. Godoy was a master at head control, which is almost a lost skill nowadays. I remember GGG and Abel trying to show Sullivan Barrera how to effectively use head control to neutralize Ward. Even Chuvalo back in the late 80’s and early 90’s said that a major weakness of Tyson’s was his ineffective use of head control when fighting on the inside. This content is protected
Armstrong and Duran for well done, subtle and technically fluid mauling. Also, watch a light flyweight called Jung Koo. He was simply brilliant at swarming, mauling etc. He broke through all styles, and proved it too. You could also watch others such as Gene Fulmer, who weren't pretty but imposed their strength. Watch Bernard Hopkins too.
In Fullmer's case, it wasn't so much "acceptable mauling" as uncensored fouling. Fullmer was so blatant about it and it was such a hallmark of his style that most referees let him get away with it. Kind of like Trump in the political arena right now.
Jack Dempsey was brilliant inside against Sharkey. It was a mauling masterclass. Hitting on the blind side, trapping arms. Kept sharkey off balance too.
Gianfranco rosi was brilliant at it. nobody ever found his rhythem vs him. same with John ruiz. awfull to watch……..but also kinda amazing how he beat much more talented fighters.
