Kid Gavilan vs Wilfred Benitez At WW

I feel Gavilan would have done better against Leonard but maybe not Hearns so I`m split, close verdict one way or the other.

 

Gavilan in a great, tough contest. His better left is key.

 

Gavilan always seemed "ready to fight". Benitez at times, showed up trying to win on "talent alone". That would be a mistake against prime Gavilan.

Gavilan pumps that left, as I said. Benitez can't avoid everything, and Gavilan was smarter.

I too like the Keed.

 

I'll take Gavilan to beat Benitez by decision in a fascinating fight. Gavilan has the quicker handspeed, higher punch output, aggression, and ring intelligence that would put Benitez in a shell.

 

This tallies with my assessment of this bout. Two all time greats.
