If they don't honor the rematch clause then Hearn will be able to sue Ruiz for considerable losses. There is no backdoor it's written in the contract which Andy Ruiz has signed.

Saving face or not, there is a rematch clause in the contract. Who do you think does Hearn's paperwork Lionel Hutz from the Simpsons!?

It's over 5 months away even in theory. Joshuas contract with Sky is coming up soon and Joshua has dozens of endorsement deals literally dependent on him continually producing the goods. There was no way they were going to say "erm on reflection we've decided to boot McCracken, completely overhaul AJ's style to take into account his suspect chin oh and btw give him 18 months to build back up by knocking cans out in London".

Why would you announce that you're activating the rematch clause? You would just activate it and then arrange a presser.

Hearn is trying to make out Ruiz is ducking.

I reckon Matchroom's rematch clause won't stand up in a US court.

He's also buying time and keeps fans and journos off his back asking. There is absolutely no way on earth Joshua's mind has balanced and reflected enough from the biggest loss of his entire career in like what 3-4 days to enable him to make a decision as important as this. It takes MONTHS. Some fighters never get over it at all.
