That lost Greb film is sitting in a vault somewhere and once a year a fat guy with a cigar sits down in a plush, empty underground theatre and watches it, chuckling to himself.
Research Ancient Greek Boxing. Look at @GlaukosTheHammer profile. Ancient Greek Boxing had styles very similar to modern ones. You could start by reading about Melankomas. Boxing technique etc always adapts to suit the ages and rules. There have always been 'dark ages' in Boxing's history. 'New' techniques are nearly always old techniques rediscovered, and possibly expounded upon.
I honestly think it's significantly stranger. Bendoff's greatest achievements are valiant losses to Jack Knifton and Jem Smith (who broke one of his hands during the fight). He did fight James Robertson Cooper for a massive purse, but again lost to in this case someone around a Welterweight who had to be talked into coming out of retirement. The impression I get is that Bendoff was fairly skilled as a boxer, but seriously lacking as a fighter.
If Loughran isn't top 30 pfp I don't know who is. The guy should have wins over Greb, Tunney, Stribling, Walker, McTigue, Braddock, and Carpentier. He was a two time Light Heavyweight Champion and a Heavyweight contender. Beat a good number of quality heavyweights..Shareky, Bear, Godoy..etc Hell he might be a top 10. Or do you just mean all three together?
You never know. Even the best fighters have styles they don’t match up well against. I remember in an old interview of Ted Lowry’s about him mentioning that he talked Weill out of matching Marciano with Joey Maxim, since Maxim was a bad style matchup for Marciano. Also, records never really tell you that much about a fighter. A guy could have a poor looking record on paper and still beat the world champion.
He was never down in his career. He won almost every round ,of every fight, against all opponents. His only losses were because of injury during the fight, and he was winning those fights. He holds one of the Highest KO % of any fighter of all time ( 87%) He stood 6' 7" , 240 + lbs , and had a mean streak. I have not seen anyone propose a match - up , were Vitali does not have a less than 50% chance.
I know what you mean, but the difference in levels in just absurd, sure Woolf's record is incomplete, but he was consistently losing to guys who were second or third tier challengers at best in a weak era. Plus in the context it obviously wasn't being meant as a bad stylistic match up, but that Woolf was just a better boxer.
While all of this is true, he was also fairly slow with his hands, relied on his size and strength to much and didn't really have a good Defence, he could avoid some slow punches but against a fast Heavyweight, like Frazier or Patterson (not that Floyd beats him) he'd be lacking. He also only really faced 3 good punchers and all of them were past it. A mean streak isn't everything, Lennox Lewis would be undefeated against Vitali's opponents. So would Liston, Ali and a far few others. In fact his KO percentage is a bit of a facade, do you think Chisora would go 12 with Lewis, Louis, Liston or Foreman? No, me neither. But hey it's your opinion
IS there a better fighter H2H than Vitali? Lennox comes close but he was KOed by lesser men. I know my opinion is unpopular, but I have yet to see anyone propose a fight were Vitali is dominated or even loses.
