'A tough test against an experienced fighter' - was quoted by A Dame Smith once with the Can having had over 70 defeats
"In Heavyweight boxing all it takes is one punch" - Trying to add excitement to the last mismatch, yeah there may be some truth to that statement but 99% of the time the fighter expected to win does, a lucky punch out of the blue rarely happens.
A when Fury uses it it means he will talk about punching someone's face in cos he's a "fighting man" but end up running and dancing around the ring potshotting.
"better than his record suggests" Probably because his record suggests he struggles to tie his own shoelaces
The assumption that everyone in British boxing, not the fighters necessarily but the cornermen, trainers, referees, the BBBC etc, are brilliant at their jobs. People like Mick Williamson, Chris Sanigar, Tony Sims, Dave Caldwell etc, and I’m not saying that they are bad at their jobs, are universally praised while all foreign cornermen, refs, officials etc are looked at as incompetent.
After all the Adam Smith, you can probably read these ones as Anna Woolhouse or Paul Dempsey as well... ‘A really stacked undercard’ Means you’ve got to wait until about 11.30pm for the main event and try not to fall asleep when 20 undercard fights go the distance. ‘This one could be fight of the night’ / ‘A real good trade fight’ Probably a dull as fook battle between two domestic nobodies but they have to make the fight sound like it’s interesting to people who are ‘in the know’.
“His jab is a real weapon” - there are a limited number of punches in boxing, so the notion that a fighter would take some time to work on the most fundamental one and learn to throw it with a bit of impact shouldn’t throw commentators as much as it does. While the old adage of “work the body and the head will fall” has some element of truth to it, the idea that body punching is playing the long game and head hunting the short one is over simplistic. There have been plenty of accumulation stoppages from head shots, and one-punch stoppages from body punches. Early knockouts are often set up with body punches. Whenever someone starts working the body though there is this assumption that they are aiming to wear the opponent down the stretch, rather than using some of the core tools available to beat up the other guy.
Completely agree with ' good learning fight ' and ' he needed the rounds ' to excuse a boring repetitive performance. Boxing is an entertainment industry. Did Mike Tyson excite so much cause he when rounds with Bonecrusher Smith or cause he was banging everyone out? A ridiculous Buncey style statement to make it look like it was all part of the plan and that the ' expert ' wanted a distance fight all along. Dubois's worse performance by miles was vs Kingpin Johnson and hitting that big lump for 10 rounds won't help at all when he gets in with the future big guns.
"It's a real 50/50 fight this one" There's always 2 fighters in there Statistically it's always a 50/50
When a overhyped british domestic level fighter is put in a cash out mismatch bout and inevitably gets beat, we hear how ''brave'' they were for their effort.
