Yeah good point. James Toney vs. Jirov was a classic, I remember those last rounds were epic. BUt honestly, I'm in pretty good shape, 10% bf, But I couldn't run a full marathon, no matter how calm and relaxed I stayed. I think going 12 rounds is just as difficult as running a marathon, if not even harder since you are getting punched too lol. anyways, just saying, it's kind of a phenomenon, don't see it too much.
Allow me to shamelessly plug my article on that fight, as it is my favorite fight ever. https://imgur.com/gallery/Tj7GXff When I was training we'd occassionally have a marathoner or triathlete come in and give boxing or Jiu-jitsu a try. They gassed out in 5 minutes like any other new guy. Because despite being in great a shape cardio-wise there is no preparing somebody for an adrenaline dump like that. The only way to get used to it is to keep going through it..
It's all genetics. You have guys like Fury who are unnaturally fast and then you have guys like Tye Fields who are slow. Corrie Sanders, Andy Ruiz and Tyson Fury are similar. You won't see much arm definition or a 6 pack, but they're faster than their much fitter peers.
This. I’ve seen Ruiz workout several times when I used to live right by Gossen’s gym. He always trained hard. He used to do a 2 lb dumbbell shadow boxing routine for 20 minutes without ever dropping his hands while throwing clean crisp combinations, 3-4 rounds on the heavybag, and then sparring. When Abel brought Gassiev to the gym Gassiev couldn’t do the 2lb dumbbell routine without dropping his hands every 2-3 minutes, so Ruiz is actually a good athlete, but he eats trash.
Since two Saturdays ago, many sports scientists have checked into clinics and immediately assumed the fetal position while gently rocking back and forth in their padded cells.....
It has alot to do with breath control and pacing. Just try to spar with a full novice and they will breath heavy after just 1 min. Then try to box against some more experienced one than yourself. Just the feel of control gives you loads of energy over your opponent.
I already answered that. You don't have to train to burn your fat if you are a boxer. He doesn't try to burn his fat. His training regime's goal is not burning fat and revealing his six packs. Ruiz is sparring, developing his boxing skills, learns how to dodge shots, how to throw effective combinations, how to knock out his opponents. Eats lots of snickers, etc while doing so (because doesn't care how he looks). On the other hand, AJ is trying to reveal his six packs, adding on muscle to look like a model. Watching what he eats. While he is busy with that, his opponent is trying to learn how to KTFO. Other members answered the rest of the question. But since you asked: muscle cells contain mitochondria, a cell organelle which is responsible for producing energy in muscle cells. When the body doesn't have enough oxygen in its muscles, and desperate to have energy, muscle cells produce lactic acid (it is the production of energy without oxygen). As lactic acid builds up in muscles, fatigue occurs. When leashing out on Ruiz and when exchanging, AJ's guts probably can't pump enough oxygen to his huge amount of muscles in time (because in boxing everything happens in very small amount of time, it is not a marathon) , therefore his body has to produce energy without oxygen and lactic acid makes him feel fatigued. He was asking to McCracken "Why am I feeling like this?", that was the lactic acid. Whereas Ruiz has fat cells instead of muscle cells. The oxygen he absorbs is enough for his relatively smaller amount of muscles, therefore he can last longer than AJ and knock him TFO while AJ is desperately breathing for more oxygen.
This. Nothing more needs to be said really. I've run my best 3k times at high teens body fat. Being fat or carrying excess fat is nowhere near as damaging to your stamina and endurance as having excess muscle mass. The muscle burns up oxygen and fills with lactic acid, it's a recipe for disaster in boxing and MMA.
Not wasting time doing roadwork, doing boxing training instead. Fitness is mode specific. Being fat is an advantage because it forces you to do proper boxing training, get fit and efficient doing that. He’s just a naturally fat guy, has been his whole life. Mexican genetics.
That’s it. When you’re relaxed you’re efficient, when you spar that is boxing specific fitness. Running is pointless for heavyweights.
