Whether Rob McCraken is a good trainer is pretty irrelevant compared with the question is AJ a good pupil ? From his performance against Ruiz I would figure most run of the mill trainer would have been concerned about one of their boxers boxing so naively! The AJ of a few years ago had a lot more going for him than what we saw at MSG , has he lost his mojo ? Or are the rumours of concussion due to getting banged out in sparring true ?whatever is true something has to improve.

    Good post.

I do think it would be suicide tho, to get rid of Rob and pick a new trainer for ruiz 2.

I won't be at all surprised if Freddie Roach is called in.

The WK fight took a lot out of him mentally, and you are never the same again, I am not hating on AJ but it was all too soon for the guy.

But getting back to the WK fight, if you watch his reactions after the fight, at times it was like he was in shock that he had to endure such a fight, and that he had actually won, he knew how close he came to getting stopped and that was when the reality set in for him, it changed him.
A fighter that goes through that knows there limits afterwards, and that is the case with AJ.

Personally I would have liked to see him go the old school route winning British European titles etc with a couple of defences chucked in for good measure, not fast tracked into some quick way of winning the HW world title and then hyped to the hilt, if that would have happened he would be ready about now to challenge for the top honors, but sadly he has been chucked under the bus and made to look the amateur that he still really is just to make a few quid early.

Makes me laugh how anyone can just start a Twitter rumour. That is how the panic attack thing started, just a fake Twitter account. Then it spreads and is everywhere and people believe it.

Funny how Hearn didn't use today as an opportune moment to announce more details on the rematch isn't it, given Wilder and Fury's track record of announcements on Joshua fight days.. Almost as if it isn't happening as planned :pipi

Amateur boxing isn't the same. 3 rounds and less power punchers.
The boxers in pros are better and will land more unless you improve the defence progressively.
Training guys to win 3 round bouts with headgear and vests is somewhat different to developing and maintaining improvements at world championship pro level.
McCracken is a good pro trainer but it looks like he neglects or lacks training the defensive abilities at that level.
Unless Joshua plans on dropping back down to Olympic level then McCracken probably needs to up the defensive focus.

Look people seem to be forgetting that Joshua was fast tracked to the top because the landscape atvthe time allowed it
He has the profile because he won ( albeit with some a gift decision along the way ) Olympic gold in the UK
So the non boxing fans knew him
And then Fury had his meltdown which allowed the world title to come easy.

Eddie hearn did what any other promoter would have done in that situation.....AJ has earnt an absolute fortune by taking advantage of the opportunities that came his way......the down side was that he hasn't had many tough 'learning' fights so he got found out a bit by a more seasoned Ruiz.

But you can't say his road to this point was badly directed or managed because any other fighter would have loved to have had that path.....making millions real fast

Joshua is a flawed fighter but still a good fighter
    Most heavyweights are flawed

    I can give instructions too

"Right Josh, what I want now is up on your toes, dancing round the ring, move like Ali, pop a stiff jab in his face, keep him turning, keep pumping that jab, pop pop pop, bust his face up"

    Oh what's that?

    He can't move like Ali?

Yeah sorry not my thought I told him how to win.

He’s approached Floyd snr. I don’t know if that’s as part of the team or for a training spell, or to replace McCracken, but he is planning to be going to Mayweather boxing club.

I think a big part of the problem is that he hasn’t been allowed to progress organically - as has been said, he was immediately hyped as the next big thing and marketed as stadium ready far sooner than he should have been. The best thing he could do now is go away and rebuild for two or three years, and I think a new trainer would be a natural part of the process - not because McCracken has done a bad job, but because he’s stagnated as a boxer and needs to learn new things. Look at Lennox Lewis as an example although, sadly, there is no analogue to Manny Steward who immediately stands out as the clear choice to be that new teacher. When I say “go away and rebuild” I don’t mean to suggest that he doesn’t fight - take on gradually improving opponents away from the enormous stadiums. Look at Lewis after McCall - Lionel Butler then Justin Fortune before stepping it up against a dangerous but vulnerable Tommy Morrison and then the bigger test in Ray Mercer.

Unfortunately, I think that because Joshua has been rushed to the upper echelons of boxing's money spinning commodities, he won’t be given the chance to do that. We’ve seen this story before - if you’re the finished article and you get caught or have an off day it’s one thing - it makes sense at that point to jump straight back to that level, but if you’re not so well rounded, you need more time to address those issues and come back stronger. Even if he wins an immediate rematch with Ruiz, I have a feeling Anthony Joshua's next defeat isn’t going to be too much further down the line.
