He won the title and headed straight to America instead of building his fanbase in wales, I don't understand the logic behind this. Frampton built his fanbase before going to America when he failed, they were still behind him. Lee selby promotion has to be one of the worst for a british champion alongside Kal yafai and terry flanagan.
I was shocked when he pissed off to America. I was at his win against Gradovich at the 02 and could not believe how much support he had. Everyone you spoke to was either a West Ham fan supporting Kevin Mitchell or Welsh supporting Selby. I never would have thought he would have had much of a following. certainly not that would travel to London for him. He also fought in Wales a good few times.
Money. He follows the money to America. And if his publicity is poor in wales then that's down to his management. Look at ricky burns up here, he was never out the papers!
Wales is a bit of a strange place. They go mad for rugby but not much else. He weren’t a national hero like Calzaghe so he was never going to do big numbers. The motorpoint only holds 5k too, maybe less for boxing? Is there any other venues there? And as said before when uncle Bob comes with them cheques you’d be a fool to turn them down (or in hindsight would you?).
He signed with al Haymon after he won the belt and more or less binned Eddie off. His first fight with Al was the Montiel defence. This was the time when Al was throwing money around and Lee got 600,000G cant rememver if that was $ or converted to £. The fight with montiel didn't go down too well and although montiel was brought in to make Lee look good, montiel looked quite well and Lee never shone on that night. Am seemed to drop Lee after that and Lee ended up fighting on MR shows for quite a pay cut as Eddie was now looking to get him for cheap. . It was one of them with Lee, he earned well in his first fight and then he got paid well vs Warrington but not much in between. I think when you put it all together he didn't do bad and the decision to go to Al was one he had to take really.
