With the death of Cus Demato and then Jim Jacobs it allowed Don King too much influence on Mike Tyson career , Kevin Rooney the last significant member of the team was dismissed and it all downhill from there . Could things have been different if the team had no changed ? Who knows but I doubt if it would have been worse. The young Mike Tyson would have been a tough fight for any top heavyweight. I think it’s easy to forget how good he was when we watch his defeats to mediocre boxers.

He's overrated in the sense that ypu post him vs anyone else other than Ali on social media and casuals always say "Tyson ko1"

But he was a hell of a fighter.

The only fighters I'd comfortably pick over him in his prime are:

    Ali
    Foreman
    Liston
    Vitali
    Evander
Tua (odd pick but I think he's all wrong for tyson with an unbreakable chin, similar proportions so Tyson can't get low as he likes, and a devastating left hook, and he wouldn't be intimidated by Tyson at all)

There's others like Frazier, bowe, Lewis and maybe Wlad who I think could beat him like 5/10 times but I wouldn't bet on it.

He's not unbeatable but he's comfortable top 10 imo.

It doesn’t appear that the OP likes Tyson much.
There’s some truth in the rant but also a load of bull****.
In his short prime Tyson was devastating, anyone who can’t see that is brain dead. His handspeed, combinations, upper body and head movement were of the highest order.
The men he beat while not stella fighters were still more than respectable.
Men like Smith, Thomas, Bruno and Tubbs certainly weren’t bums.
Even the Holmes knockout although clearly Larry was past his prime, he was still good enough after this fight to hand Ray Mercer his first career loss and take Holyfield the distance.
Not many are saying Tyson was the greatest of all time, but in that short prime he would have been a problem for any one.

Mike Tyson over a period of 2-3 years in the late 80s has a good chance of beating anyone in history. Explosive power, a speed demon, killer instinct and skills to burn.

Unfortunately he was badly lacking in character outside the ring which was his downfall.

Listen to his podcast. Hot boxing. Very funny.

    He wasn't overated at all.

    Prime Mike was an ATG

Just that his prime was at an early age due to his physique and style.

In all sports certain athletes peak and different ages/points for various reasons.

If Tyson had retired after he demolished Spinks, he would have been pretty much unanimously considered the best to ever to it.
His life imploded, and his legacy suffered as a result, but I believe for a short period in the 80s Tyson was the best to ever have done it.
Ali is and always will be the greatest, and several fighters can be considered greater than Tyson, but at his best Id favour him against anyone in history.

    Agree.

If Jones retired after beating ruiz there'd be a contingent saying he would have beaten Lewis.

You have to judge on a whole career.

You think Tyson would have been considered the greatest ever if he retired at the age of 21?

That seems a very singular reason right there as to why he wouldn't have been considered the greatest. It's like saying if Michael Owen retired after the 1998 World Cup that he'd be held in the same regard as Maradona and Pele.

You can clearly see Tyson's deterioration from the 90's onwards. Late 80's he was so fast and athletic with elite head movement. The peek-a-boo stance, constantly bobbing and weaving, he was a hive of activity with great stamina and a solid chin. During that time I think he can beat anyone h2h. However, he finished with Rooney and deteriorated from there. He didn't train for the Douglas fight and was already not the same fighter. The decline after the separation from Rooney was immediate.

Mike Tyson - could've been the best ever IMO but threw it all away very early. As soon as he split with Rooney he became a different fighter. A lazy head hunter. Therefore he never proved his greatness which is a shame.

I agree with this, in that short time from the mid to late 80’s, I believe he would have beaten anyone past or present...but careers are not judged on a handful of years but rather the majority of it. He was a serious drug addict who was incapable of removing himself from his past and the distractions outside the ring. He lacked commitment, desire and self discipline. Considering all this, he still achieved so much.
