Gavin Rees, Amir Khan, and Junior Witter immediately spring to mind because they were in a very weak division at the time at light welterweight, most other divisions /most other times, they would have never have been world champions. Souleymayne M'baye was based in the UK and signed with Frank Warren at that time as well ( although hes not british) and he was another weak Light Welter belt holder.

The weakest though in my opinion whom nobody has mentioned yet = Paul Butler

Groves definitely doesn't belong in this list. You say 'name me one moment when Groves was the best super middle'. That's a very difficult yard stick to judge a fighter against because very often the best in the division don't meet each other at the right time.

But, Groves was a good shout for best SM when he won the title. Other titliests at that time were Degale, who Groves has a W over, and who was well on the slide by then (losing to Traux shortly thereafter), Badou Jack, who Groves lost narrowly to 2 years prior when he was still trained by that cowboy, and Ramirez.

Groves was a damn fine shout for best in the division at that point in time, but I could understand others leaning towards Jack.

Groves was a solid, deserving champion in my opinion and is not appropriate for this list. I would have him above Ritchie Woodhall who I don't think has been mentioned in this list. Just my thoughts of course.

Not sure light welter is as bad as you're making out. Hatton, Castillo, Malignaggi, Harris, Maidana and Kotelnik weren't chumps.

this old theory that you have to have done it against someone to be good.....i could watch Messi and Ronaldo against Port Vale and decide how good they are. So if Messi never played against a big team it would somehow diminish his ability level?

Looking at other mentioned names I can see my original post being perceived as harsh. Like I say groves was quality and I guess even in the froch fights he lost he put up a great fight in both, drew with Jack and so on, so I'll concur. Groves probably did deserve to become a champ and maybe earlier in his career

Going to be unpopular here, but I'm going to say Tony Bellew. Just didn't rate him as a world level performer. Won his belt against an under par opponent, beat a crippled old man twice, and then taught a lesson by Usyk. Don't try to tell me he gave Usyk problems, because all the Usyk did was wait for him to blow out, before putting him on his rectum. Easy nights work for him.
Respect for what he achieved though, he over achieved.

    Nonsense

Plenty of hype jobs have been exposed long AFTER having a better win than David lemiuex

All I know about saunders is he looks flash against no hopers

Until I see him step up I can't go any further than that analysis

I agree 100%. You could argue Bellew is the best promoted fighter ever. How they made him a PPV attraction is nothing short of astonishing.

I do believe that "all you know is that BJS looks flash against no hopers", but you aint me. Like I said I could watch Messi in training and know how talented he is.

I watched Loma in the amateurs and knew he was special and would destroy the pro's, I watched GGG for years before he had a big name and could see he was special.

YOU might need to see them beat a somebody to be able to see what talent they have that doesnt mean that the rest of us do.

Under par opponent? Makabu is still a top 5 cruiserweight now! There isn’t a better world title win either. He was put on his arse by a KO artist in front of his home crowd at his boyhood clubs stadium and came back and somehow stopped him. It was fairytale stuff. I hate Everton and I hate all his cringeworthy Everton stuff but you can’t argue with that.

Haye (who everyone said would knock him out) wasn’t a world title defence so shouldn’t come in to question.

Usyk everyone said he wouldn’t have the balls to take, he did and gave it his all - there’s no shame losing to him.

He’s far from the greatest champion we’ve ever had but he’s certainly not the worst.
