I want start off by saying from a fans point view, this ‘franchise belt’ is bull crap it just means that Canelo doesn’t have to fight any mandatories with their belts from now on but from a business side of things it’s an excellent business move. Now the WBC no longer have to strip Canelo so they get their fees regardless of whether Canelo fights the number one challenger or not. If a belt like this exists do you still recognise the WBC super title holders in a division with a franchise belt as a champ or are they now just a glorified mandatory contender who won’t get a mandatory shot in with WBC?
I believe the WBC "Taco Clen Franchise" is gonna be huge! Clearly a move to get rid of mandatories and Mictlantecuhtli forbid, (losing) purse bids!

And then there's the Diamond, Ruby, Emerald and new Pearl champion as well. You must be quite the shirty boxer if you can't win a single WBC or WBA belt in your career.

The Franchise Champion appears to be more like an honorary champion in my opinion. As far as I am concerned Canelo has been stripped of the WBC belt and is no longer WBC middleweight champion. I think the WBC have actually been quite clever in retaining a financial interest in Canelo's fights while stripping him. The Franchise belt is essentially the boxing equivalent of the Emperor's New Clothes. Canelo may think it is real but it isn't.
It's really kind of pathetic. Nobody's going to remember these 3000 different belts and nobody's going to remember that the Franchise Champion Belt > Franchise McFlurry Belt .... but not if there are sprinkles on the McFlurry. All I'll think when a guy has a WBC belt is "oh, he must be a bum who won one of the 50 WBC belts". They're knobbing their brand with this crud.
The WBC is a complete joke, same with the WBA. Why was Machado the regular WBA champion and Tank Davis elevated to WBA super champion. I understand that Tank is the better fight but why was Machado demoted before he even had a loss to Cancio? I have a feeling that the WBA is going to demote Daniel Roman from the main champion at 122lb to interim and give Brandon Figueroa the real WBA belt because he is with Al Haymon. The only legit belts these days are WBO and IBF and I remember back in the day the WBO never really counted.
I don't know you could easily think this was about money instead of a status of excellance in boxing...then I guess I'd be a cynic...
Coming from Dan Rafael the WBC really stripped Canelo in a way that wouldn’t **** him.. When they made GGG the interim champion and tried to force a purse bid before Canelo fought Chavez Jr he shunned them and dropped the belt then refused to acknowledge them during the first GGG fight.. Al Haymon put pressure on them to force the mandatory as Charlo been the WBC mando for 2 years and they didn’t want to risk the Canelo relationship again while also risking the Haymon relationship.. They was gonna force the mando on GGG but didn’t want to force it in Canelo which makes this whole thing a mockery.. Similar situations when Floyd didn’t wanna fight Margarito or Paul Williams where no one is saying those guys are remotely close to being as great as FMJ but their styles posed bad matchups for him that he wasn’t willing to risk
