Alex Stewart was ranked in the Ring top 10 when Tyson beat him in 1990. Tyson also beat Ruddock 2x.

Bowe also beat Golota 2x and Jorge Luis Gonzalez.

Tua only beat Rahman once, and I don't believe Moorer was top 10 when Tua beat him (although Oquendo may have been, but not sure on Ruiz, either).

And off the top of my head, I believe Byrd has Tua, McCline, Oquendo and Vitali.

And was Gomez really Top 10 when he faced Vitali?

I don't think Chisora or Solis were ranked when Vitali fought them?
Ditto for Wlad Thompson 2nd fight,Byrd, Peter 2nd fight .
What is rather revealing are the number of unranked challengers both defended against.

I’m sure Solis was ranked. Not 100 percent sure on Chisora.

Competed to today’s top three, Lewis and the klitschko’s fought far more top ten opponents.

    Agree with you on Morrer.

I’m sure Gomez was ranked when Vitali fought him.

Oquendo was ranked for Byrd? I doubt that.

I think Ruddock was only ranked once for Tyson.

No he was ranked both times. I have all the Ring and KO mags. Before he fought Tyson in March 1991 Ruddock was ranked #3 right behind Tyson at #2 and Holyfield at #1. A loss to Mike Tyson didn't drop him out of the Top 10. In fact, he only dropped from #3 to #4 AFTER the rematch loss to Tyson and was replaced by Riddick Bowe.

EDIT: The Ring magazine issue July 1991. "Tyson's Title Hopes - He Ain't What He Used To Be But It's Not Gonna Matter". For period ended March 20, 1991 after Tyson beat Ruddock the first time...

    1, Evander Holyfield
    2. Mike Tyson
    3. Razor Ruddock
    4. Riddick Bowe
    5. Tim Witherspoon
    6. Buster Douglas
    7. Ray Mercer
    8. Carl Williams
    9. George Foreman
    10. Lennox Lewis

Holyfield fought Dokes and Thomas in 1989, 1988. So can't include them as "since" 1990.

I doubt Ruddock was ranked for Morrison fight in 1995.
I doubt Mercer was ranked for Holyfield in 1995 either.

Regarding Vitali, Chisora was not ranked by Ring. Solis was not ranked by Ring. Kevin Johnson was not ranked by Ring. Arreola was not ranked by Ring before the fight. Williams no.

Peter was. Gomez was. Adamek was. Sanders was. Kirk Johnson was.

    So Vitali has FIVE.

Regarding Wilder, Luis Ortiz was rated #5 when Wilder fought him in 2018. He's rated #6 currently, and Wilder is fighting him next. So Wilder has one (almost two) with Ortiz. Tyson Fury was still listed as the RING champion when 2018 began and he was rated #2 at the end of 2018 after Wilder, so Wilder has Fury, too. Bermane Stiverne was rated #2 by Ring at the start of 2015 for fight one and #7 by Ring at the start of 2017 when Wilder fought him in a rematch. So Wilder has two with Stiverne.

So Wilder has four with his fifth (Ortiz return) signed. (Wilder would have five or six in the can already, but Povetkin failed his drug test and Fury bolted the rematch.)

Anthony Joshua has Povetkin, Parker and he just signed to fight Ruiz (who is ranked now) again ... two going on three.

Andy Ruiz has Joshua, Parker and he is fighting Joshua again next ... so two going on three.

Fury has two - Wlad and Wilder.

Regarding Bowe, Tubbs wasn't rated by Ring. Coetzer wasn't rated by Ring. Donald wasn't rated by Ring. Golota wasn't before either fight (but was after the return).

Holyfield was for the first two but not the third. Herbie Hide was.

So Bowe has THREE (Holyfield in 92 and 93) and Hide ... but only two of the three were wins (he lost the return to Evander).

Wrong Solis, Arreola and Johnson were absolutely ranked by Ring magazine the before and when Viiali fought them.

The key here is ranked when they fought not after

    Johnson then undefeated was 10th
    Solis 9th

I’m sure that it’s in the monthly issue.

    Arreola I believe 7th.

Stiverene was ranked for the rematch with Wilder by Ring Magazine??? That is hard to believe. Wasn’t he inactive for a two years? Yep. Ring magazine drops guys with that inactivity from their ratings.

Oquendo faced Byrd in 03. Oquendo was Top 10 at the end of 01, 03, and 04. I imagine he probably must have been Top 10 in the month before facing Byrd, otherwise he wouldn't have remained Top 10 after losing to Byrd. And Moorer wasn't when Tua beat him.

You're correct about Gomez, although for the life of me, I have no idea how he was ever ranked as a Top 10 in 2008 (or ANY year at HW for that matter). He wasn't ranked in 2007, and his only bout in 2008 was a victory was against Vyrchys. Hardly something that seems worthy of propelling him into the top 10.
