Frank Warren has supposedly put a 50/50 split offer on the table to Eddie Hearn for a PPV match in the UK. I have my doubts the match takes place, these two don't like each other all that much, it could just be a publicity stunt on Warren's part. Or maybe Saunders sees something in Mundo he thinks he can exploit, and truly fancies his chances. Also a win over Mundo easily catapults Saunders into one of, if not the top spot in the UK, and give him a bargaining chips against Canelo or GGG. So it may be a risk he's more than willing to take. Because on top of that, he'd also be the man a 168 at that point. If he loses, at least he can say he dared to be great, by taking on one of the only legitimate powerhouse monsters in that vastly overrated division.

Personally I think this is a potentially bone headed move on Saunders part, and not just because he had that one off moment against Isufi, where he got rocked by the shot to the temple, after all, Isufi used to campaign at Light Heavy and is a decent puncher. But here's the catch, Callum should be at 175 as well. To say he's a big SMW is an understatement, he's a literal monster, and kind of a weight bully, so there's always a possibility that he gives Saunders the N'Dam treatment and comes out guns blazing and bashes him out of the ring in 5 or 6 rounds. Also, fingers crossed, maybe Saunders gets him at that moment where he can no longer make the weight, sooner or later, that day is coming.

Stumbling block for Mundo? Saunders is more elusive and far more defensively sound than N'Dam, has a better chin than N'Dam, has better footwork and timing than N'Dam, so don't lockstep go with the herd. That match against that particular MW meant nothing. Make no mistake, Saunders is the most skilled guy Callum will have ever shared the ring with, quite frankly, Saunders is also more well rounded than Groves. N'Dam was landing some solid shots on Callum, as was Groves, Groves was outboxing Callum was relative ease in between getting rocked. So... the idea that Saunders can't hang could just be a reflexive figment of our imagination. It's not like Smith has great footwork or does anything all that well. His timing is decent, has a solid straight right and a counter left hook, things Saunders can easily neutralize, also it must be noted, Callum hasn't faced a ton of southpaws in the past, is there a reason for that? Hmmm. He has issues with guys with good timing and a solid jab, Saunders jab is a beauty, and we know he not only trains to the level of his opponent, but sometimes also fights to the level of his opponent, so the idea of Saunders 2.0 putting on a masterclass shouldn't be out of the question, also, the possibility that we see a Saunders 3.0, that brings that immaculate Gypsy slickness and puts on a star making showcase of the skillset all of us fanboys of his knows he possesses, isn't far fetched. Yes, this is an incredibly dangerous match for Billy Joe, but also a winnable one.

    What say you?

I'd like to see it but BJS is in the habit of wasting his career doing absolutely nothing so I wont hold my breath.

Smith should fight someone his size. Someone like Bivol or Ramirez perhaps.

BJS can't handle Smith's combination of size, reach and energy.

Smith is afraid to move up IMO. He should have done this after winning the WBSS. This is insane that he still tries to make 168. He looked dead on the scales several times but could shake it off between weigh in and fight but to be honest the level of opposition wasn't that good.

Groves was half shot, involved in too many wars, and still managed to win some rounds and made it close (would have been a draw after 6 rounds).

Holzken was an opponent on short notice, did very well, tuf mf with kickboxing background, but Smith lost rounds to this guy and wasn't even close to hurt & stop him.

N'Dam is no 168 pounder. And is half shot aswell + has questionable chin and punch resistance.

Skoglund also went distance with Smith and Smith didn't look that good in the fight IMO. Skoglund made it close.

So let's be clear here....Smith didn't fight high class opposition in my opinion. Also wins over Fielding, Blackledge or Sjekloca are not really convincing me here.

I think Smith is highly overrated at 168. But not sure how to rate Saunders at 168. Going the distance with Isufi is no shame as Isufi is big guy, fought as high as CW and Saunders clearly felt the power in that round where the ropes saved him from getting dropped.

I would probably favor Saunders here because i think his movement will give Smith big trouble. Not sure if Saunders can take the power if Smith lands a big shot like Isufi did. So maybe 60/40 Saunders? Maybe pick em. Who knows.

Really split about the fight and the outcome. Still, would be a great fight. But i am pissed about Saunders ducking all the big draws at 160 !!! Canelo fought Golovkin and Jacobs. Golovkin fought Canelo and Jacobs. Jacobs fought Golovkin and Canelo. Andrade at least is stepping it up (Sulecki gave Jacobs a good fight). And what is Saunders doing? Fighting Isufi at 168. **** you louthmouded mf. Go back to 160 and fight Golovkin or Canelo or STFU. Saunders has a terrible resume considering his trash talk. He should start fight ELITE fighters or shut his mouth down once and for all.

Lemieux, Willie Monroe, and Isufi his best competition, all in the last 2-3 years, and he hasn't been no where near tested as much since Eubank Jr, and this fight I think would do that. Smith is much bigger and has a much bigger reach. BJS wants that payday with GGG or Canelo, and I think he's somewhat squandering himself as a result, no excuse to be that inactive though.

The fight won't happen. Joe Gallagher doesn't want it.

It's a genuine 50/50. I give a slight edge to Saunders if they ever fight. Smith is a good fighter but Bill has more tricks in his locker.

There's a possibility that Smith just won't be able to deal with BJS 2.0's slippery style at all and if he can't he won't be the first or the last to be completely befuddled by the Slick Gypsy style. However, I was very impressed by Smith's last performance and especially his timing and his efficiency. Granted N'Dam is a MW and Smith is a large SMW but the later is very well-schooled and he wastes very little and those shots he dropped N'Dam with were quality.

Personally, I think Benavidez is the best SMW on the planet and he's even bigger on fight night than Smith is (weight wise obviously) but I do give Smith a better chance against him now than I previously did. But who knows maybe none of the other current champs at 168 will be able to overcome the Slick Gypsy style and will get taken for a lesson down at Slick School by the slickest gypsy on the planet?

Smith, all day every day. Saunders (relative to sentiment on this forum) sucks. He made the funny sailor salute against Lemieux and a bunch of folks fell in love.

It will always depend on which BJS shows up.

The one that has to crash diet 40 pounds in 3 months, gases and as a result gets clopped late.

The one that is already lean going into training and isn’t in a fat camp probably puts on a boxing clinic.

How about the people like IB, myself, @Serge and @lepinthehood who have long believed Saunders to be the fighter that showed up that night, and that was only validation? You can poo poo that performance all you want, but the reality is, when has Lemieux ever been as thoroughly dominated aside from the GGG match? The Alcine loss was very competitive, and that had to do with not being in the proper mindset coming off of a loss. The Rubio match before the KO was a one sided beatdown from Lemieux. No one has ever done that to Lemieux, except for the best MW in the world. Also the win over Lee and Eubank, are also kind of indicative of what level he's truly operating on. He had the matches all sewn up, and took his foot off the gas both times and coasted. Saunders only downside is lackadaisical mindset and occasional laziness. But when he's on, he's as special as they come.
