First thread! Hi all. I was watching the Charlo Williams fight from 2016, the 5th round KO is easily one of the best counter punches I've ever seen. You can barely see it in real time. He doesn't take his eyes off him, parrys his jab and his right and lands the uppercut. Loma, Danny Garcia, Canelo etc good counter punchers, but can anyone think of instances with active boxers where the counter was just pure genius which would merit a mention.
HW - Andy Ruiz Jr., Luis Ortiz. Joshua is actually good counter puncher, and Dillian Whyte surprisingly too. His counter left hook is a thing of beauty CW - Usyk, Briedis LHW - Gvozdyk, Bivol SMW - ??? MW - Canelo LMW - Lara WW - Mickey and Danny Garcia, anthough neither of them is top-5 WW LWW - Postol, Taylor LW - Loma, Haney Below LW? Inoue probably, although I'm not following those weight classes closely except of Inoue's weight class, super featherweight and TBE - Chayaphon Moonsri
Estrada is a good flyweight counter puncher his fight against Rungavisi 2018 was a classic, as was the whole card, but the puncher prevailed that time.
Canelo and Estrada are probably the two best at it now. Williams looked good doing it. Fury too. Groves was always pretty useful when he chose to counter.
On the Williams-Jermall KO; supposedly it was something they worked on in the camp. I think it was Ronnie Shields who talked about it. He said the noticed that Williams had a tendency to lean in after the right hand. And Jermall had a hard time timing it the whole night. But boy did they get it right! Willaims threw a 1-2, left his chin hanging out there on the center line and bang!
I still think at his very best, Guillermo Rigondeaux out of the current boxers is still the absolute best at counter punching. Now of course he is no longer at his best anymore. But as long as Rigo is still boxing, his name will always pop up first thing when thinking about the best counter-punchers.
Inoue is a very good counter puncher, not just a big hitter. That Payano knockout was pure art. Slipped inside the jab and it was curtains.
