I was watching this clip on twitter and Ray`s power combined with his combo skills when finishing seem incomparable, is that the case? Did anyone finish better than Ray P4P in any decade? This content is protected
In terms of fluidity - no. A few names that I would suggest are worthy of closer examination at their best: Louis Williams Charles Napoles Tyson
I can only assume the referee wanted to see that lad killed, just as well the towel came in, because he wasn’t stopping it. Also after the first knockdown, did his opponent hurt Sugar Ray with a right hand as he was moving in?
A right hand kidney punch was one of his signature punches? That's tantamount to declaring that Robinson was a cheating dirty fighter. So when was a kidney punch not deemed an illegal punch in the ring?
One of the greatest for sure . The greatest ? Impossible to say in my opinion. There have been so many EXCELLENT finishers through out the long history of boxing. Cuevas , Pryor , Duran , R.Leonard could be absolutely viscous. Hagler after the Anterfermo fight when he adapted the" Destruct and Destroy" motto. Tyson rarely let a fighter off the hook, W.Gomez ,Zarate, Olivaires, Monzon, very rarely allowed a 2nd chance . Mugabi before Hagler, Holyfield and Marciano were excellent finishers, same with B.Foster. Of course J.Louis with some of the prettiest, and deadliest combinations in boxing history, every punch he used thrown with max leverage and technique, short, precise almost impossible to defend against when he had his opponents hurt. G.Foreman, or J.Frazier wouldn't let a fighter off the hook. G.Cooney was absolutely dangerous prior to the Holmes fight . Hell Ali was able to predict what rd he was going to take his opponent out in his prime meaning he was a great finisher when motivated. So the greatest "finisher" ever? I'd say "Hell if I know". But I will say they were all fun to watch.
The only ones here that could match or outdo Ray as finishers were eithder one punch KO artists or brillant fast and solid combo punch finishders like Ray, that would single out Tyson, Duran and Louis none of the others you listed had this perfect blend while finishing, though a few you named here were far harder punchers than Ray, I feel the fact that Raay stopped the iron chinned Lamotta puts him above all these guys.
No. Unlike Floyd Mayweather in his fight with Berto Ray’s style left him open to check uppercuts. Ray would also start breathing in more through his left nostril than his right the longer his fights went on.
Ali stopped the "Iron chin" Bonavea , J.Frazier didn't in 30 total rds. my point is its impossible to say one fighter is "The greatest " finisher in history when there are so many different variables that could influence the outcome. Unlike winning percentages and who a fighter beat or the fighters consistency which can determine greatness . For example , If we were to go strictly by the numbers Archie Moore would be the greatest finisher of all time.
