I love both fighters but I lean to Carlos. I think Carlos would survive an early rush and use his better boxing skills and sharp punching to stop Pipino by round 10. However, Pipino Cuevas would stand a puncher's chance with anyone. I wouldn't bet the house on this one.
Palomino would have to be extreemly patient & extend Cuevas to the late rounds. & stay away from sprited exchanges. But with the latin Blood & the electric atmoshere this bout would surely have, I don't know if this is possible. If Polomino avoided exchanges the crowd would boo him & he is too proud for that. Uncontrolled exchanges would play into Cuevas' hands, ( well actually his left hook). But actually Palomino is pretty crafty If he survives to the late round he could take over & win a UD. Tough choice in this one.
If Palomino elects to trade at all in the early rounds, then he's toast. But, he was a smart fighter, and I think he'd realize that boxing Cuevas would be his best option; and, he was good enough that he'd be able to to build a solid lead. Cuevas has his moments, but can't put Palomino away, and Carlos surges down the stretch to earn a hard fought, but clear UD.
if Palomino could withstand the early Onslaught he takes it ..... in my opinion...p.s. also Palomino had a great chin I don't believe he was ever knocked out
Palamino survives the initial onslaught and wins on points. A good chin generally beats the big puncher. Especially if the man with the good chin is the superior boxer.
I think this pretty much hits the nail on the head. Palomino is just a better, more well rounded fighter. He has many routes to victory in this fight, including I think a late stoppage. Cuevas basically has one route to victory - if he doesn't get the early KO, it becomes essentially a question of how he will lose the fight.
I think Cuevas takes him out. He was more than just a come-forward banger, he did have some skills, and he could punch with that level of ferocity and intensity all 15 rounds if he had to. Meanwhile, Palomino saw the canvas against the lesser punchers at the weight, such as Duran and Muniz. At least I kind of remember him getting put down briefly by Muniz, someone might have to correct me if I'm off there. Also, Palomino was no Randy Shields defensively so I can't see him getting to the championship rounds against Pipino.
The third Espada fight for Pipino is still a favorite of mine. Angel did everything he could and Cuevas still walked him down and banged him out. Carlos was durable, crafty and well-rounded. Had great stamina. Came in late in fights but a lot of those fights were tougher than they needed to be. He was a slow starter and I think that’s where Cuevas has the edge. Pipino damages him early and wins by UD with Carlos making a late rally to make it fairly close.
Palomino had a rock solid chin. He was a good body puncher too. I think he knocks out Pipino. Plus Pipino Cuevas did not have good defensive skills.
I give Cuevas a slight edge over Palomino, I watched many fights with both of them when I was growing up, and I say on any given night, flip a coin, but for 1 fight Cuevas was have the slightest of edge in winning it, almost too close to call
