He's clearly past it. Fighters however are often the last to know and obviously with another lucrative payday available then I doubt he hangs them up voluntarily. Nothing new there. Now as for Golovkin himself I have no doubt he thinks he can still pull it off but looking at what we've seen so far even if he did he needs a KO to win. There's no way he wins a fight on the cards if Canelo is at all competitive and judging on fights one and two he will be again.
