How can we get rid of some of these corrupt organisations and get back to 1-2 champs per division

    Pessimistic, but realistic.

The only other path I can see to unification of the belts is for some (eccentric) billionaire boxing enthusiast to come along and buy out the big four, and maybe the little fellas too.

I'm not sure how much their combined net worth comes to, but there are undoubtedly some individuals who have sufficiently deep pockets if they were so inclined.

It would probably not be a profitable move, so its would have to be done for the love and good of the sport.

That being the case, the chances of this happening would be very slim.

Even your magical billionaire doesn't help.

Say he's a virtuous billionaire who loves boxing so much he wants to spend tens of millions buying out the WBC, WBA, IBF, WBO, IBU, NABC, IBA, IBO, WBF, NBA and the other ones i've forgotten or never heard of, and say he spends millions and millions more making staff made redundant sign ironclad non-competition contracts, why wouldn't a half-dozen sanctioning organisations immediately appear to replace them anyway? Why would they just go "yeah, let the virtuous billionaire have his way"? Lawyers, crooks, legitimate business types in the Philippines, Mexico, Australia, UK, they're all just going to ignore the fact that second to sixth tier customers of the former ABCs no longer have anyone to buy from? Ignore the money that's to be made?

Introduce Stalinism or Facism worldwide. Nationalize and unify all TV stations, streaming networks and Youtube under 1 organization. Nationalize and Unify all boxing organizations. Only allow 1 belt per division with mandatory challengers fought regularly; offending promoters/TV stations will be prosecuted and given the gulag treatment.

There you have it. That's the only way it would happen. Otherwise, if you even have some random TV station who wants to show a 'world title fight' they will find some joke organization who will come up with some ABC belt.

    Probably true.

But if we had a formal amalgamation of the ABCs into a new organization, and concurrent mandated bouts to bring about one champion per weight class, and sensible criteria put in place for rankings and mandatory defences, then at least for a time, there would be one legitimate champion in each division.

And we would have a mini golden era where a number of highly interesting 'unification' bouts would took place. This would necessitate our boxing benefactor buying out most of the big promoters as well. ( Their existence and competing interests are even more detrimental to the sport, IMO, than the plethora of sanctioning bodies.)

As you point out, maintaining this new regime would be the tricky part.

There would always be some enterprising soul who would want to break into the game for a piece of the action.

It would be an improvement for a while, though.

    One can but dream.
