Imagine if football was PPV. Last night was probably equivalent of Tottenham vs Wolves. Sky can magic money up to put on F1, Football, cricket etc. But when it comes to boxing they can’t? Rubbish, they’re just fleecing a market for what they can. Because idiots like us continue to pay it. Also the boxers are marketed that brilliantly, you genuinely think you’re watching something world class. Because unlike football, boxing isnt marketed everyday, so you genuinely don’t know if they are good or not as a casual. You market them like they are the next Mike Tyson with a news reporter on SSN, casuals fall for it. Last nights chief support was Dave Allen v David Price for god sake. That’s like Brentford vs Halifax. Casuals don’t know that. Just look at Twitter, some think it was an off night for Allen. Reality is that was his best and he’s just utter turgid.
Sky should just get out of boxing if they don't want to invest proper money. Then hearn would be free to bring dazn to the UK
They tried it, it did not work for them, but others give it go (Spanish Football for the UK). But boxing does as a PPV sport. As previously mentioned closed circuit boxing began over 50 years ago and SKY PPV boxing has been going for 23 years, if it was not a success, surely the model would have changed?!
It wasn't terrible but it wasn't good. Main event was alright, a little bit of drama there. Chsiora got an awful KO, which is always fun (he is impossible to predict as a fighter). That aside, it was poor. And yet still on Fb etc I see people talking about a 'great night of boxing'. A GREAT night!? It's terrifying.
People seem to be judging PPV whether they were good fights or not. That’s not how it should work. I’ve seen bantamweights without a household name have wonderful tear ups, does that make it PPV? PPV should be for the big names against big opponents. Not on the off chance they could have an entertaining fight.
It is nothing to do with good fights/big names per se, it is about if money can be made. Good fights and big names would help, but are not a prerequisite.
Personally i thought it was the worst PPV ive seen on a long long time Main event was decent but no more Why are served crap like Riakphore, Allen, Okoliepus vs cabbie, when peole like Scott Quigg, Kell Brook, hell even Connor Benn have no fights lined up If you enjoyed fair play but i thought it was an awful night that exposed Hearns dedication to the UK market comarrd to the US right now Whilst i understand it as a british boxing fan i neither like or appreciate it
It can't be judged retrospectively. Before the evening starts you have to look at the card and think "OK, I can see where the extra money is going and feel it's worthwhile". If the fights end up sucking then so be it, can't always be helped. Look at the Pac card this weekend. Plant fight aside, they were all very competitive on paper and included a lot of quality fighters. You can see where the extra money was going.
There are two totally different perspectives though. Promoter is purely about numbers and nothing to do with fights. Where as a fan paying, the fights are relevant. This it is only a score attitude does my head in. My boss pays all my TV and Broadband costs, so if I brought it, he would end up paying. I still didn't buy the card Saturday as the card was a liberty as a PPV in my opinion. I enjoyed The main event. But Price vs Allen as the co main is an outrage really.
