Allen's already beat Tom Little with ease. That's Allen's problem - too good for pure domestic types, but way off anything higher. A combination of abilities and styles working against him.
How many times has he mentioned retirement in the last year alone? His head isn't right and he needs some time away to seriously consider his options. I bet he doesn't look after himself over the next few months, for me that's the end for him because you have to live the life, not just live the life the money allows you to live. It was good for British boxing that he got that schooling, that beating and came out of it alive and well still. The circus had gone on for too long, well done on Allen's part for going as far a he has with the ability he has and the limited dedication he's put in, largely, over the course of his career. He's done pretty well for himself but I just don't see where he goes from here, 4 or 5 rebuilding fights, keeping in shape and improving? I can't see that happening. To think he was seriously talking about fighting Joshua, to think there were people on here who seriously thought he could beat Joshua.
He's yet to fight him, it would be an absolute horror show on both parts if he did, the Matchroom massive would love the build up though, a wideboy and a northern ****** going at each other with Lad Bible banter.
Is Hearn really trying to pat himself on the back and justify, in a roundabout way, repeatedly putting Dave Allen in way over his head here?
Having a cult following isn’t so fun in the fight game, you’ll eventually get seriously hurt. Allen has pushed his limit, either step down a peg or two or call it a day
In fairness though, before the fight most saw Price losing this...I was surprised that his stamina held up.
As someone else has mentioned, He is crying out for help. Matchroom should step in here and give Dave Allen some kind of corporate or social media role similar to how premiership football clubs operate. With a bit of training and education, this is something he would actually excel in and would actually enjoy doing. In hindsight, It is truly scary to think what Povetkin would have done to Allen in a 12 round fight. He needs saving from himself and I hope someone around him and/or the Board step in sooner rather than later. If Tom Little beats Lucas Browne or gives him a competitive fight, that will further put things into perspective. The OP made this thread over a year ago and eerily its context is more relevant today than ever.
Know what you mean by that but there’s fighters out there who fight on for pennies. Allen has done remarkably well given his ability due to having this cult following. He’s been well paid, bought himself a house etc... I agree he should think about calling it a day now though, he’s been lucky with the opportunities and should get out while he’s all there.
Post fight for his last one he was talking about setting up some evening fun with the ladies, which suggests he's still carefree and lacking any stability at home. He's also talked about wanting kids but admitting he was thinking wishfully at that time. If he hasn't got a good woman then he needs one more than his next fight.
I’m not sure if a corporate or social media role would satisfy Allen. The guy is self destructive, has mental health issues and needs to fight - not a good combination.
