I think we all knew and feared this was coming, from like the moment he left the ring. Fuck boxing.

Wow. When I read the report a couple days ago that they had done the surgery and given him an "unknown long-term prognosis," I took that to mean he was out of the most immediate danger and it would become a wait-and-see, Adonis Stevenson situation.

RIP. Horrible end and I feel bad for all involved, but especially the family.

Thoughts first & foremost to his family, obviously, but another less immediately apparent victim of this lack of regulatory oversight is Subriel Matías. The kid was just in there doing his job and now has a death on his conscience. Anybody that has followed Sergey Kovalev for a long time knows how much the Roman Simakov incident weighed on him (for those who don't: it had a profound effect on his mental health and nearly caused him to quit his career).

The sport just really needs to do better. Worldwide. Russia, USA, doesn't matter.

I think unfortunately with brain edemas there's no exact medical science in terms of predicting recovery (or even survival) within a week of trauma... Adonis Stevenson after this same period of time could have gone the same way. You're just walking a razor's edge, and kind of need to be lucky. (and obviously under the best possible care, but still...beyond a certain point, it kind of is down to just luck)

Oh man, just horrible news, but it seemed inevitable and hearing half of his skull had been removed due to massive brain swelling. Just awful, awful news. It makes me so sad to hear. And to think we just watched a world title fight with no drug testing. Time for boxing to start taking all this garbage seriously. Bad, bad weekend for the boxing world. RIP Maxim.

This is so god damn sad. Seek another profession, people. If you cant afford college, learn a trade. Do NOT be a fighter.

This is more than double. This is unacceptable. And the problem is there is no direct accountability to point to, as there are, in the jurisdiction of most sporting commissions, multiple parties empowered to leverage a stoppage of the action in brutally one-sided fights: the corner, the ref, the ringside physician, and sometimes even the commissioner or representative. All of those people can just say "well...the other people didn't jump to act, so...I kind of just went along with the general tide of feeling that we should give him every last chance..." and you can't really argue with that.

Idk what the solution is, honestly. But we can't be having a power-punching young talent out-landing his opponent by over 2:1, and let it drag on into the late rounds like that. We just can't.

In college sports they have mercy rules when a team is getting statistically dominated (by points margins WAY below 319:157...) Nobody is risking getting their brain pounded to jelly by somebody else's fists in college sports.
