I think the top modern heavies are vastly underrated but do fans feel some older heavyweights were underrated equally?
Trevor' Berbick . First man to take Holmes the distance. Beat Greg page Upset Pinklon Thomas . Beat John Tate . Only stopped twice in 23 years .
Berbick's not a bad shout, actually. Far from the joke figure he used to be made out as. Damiani was a better fighter than people tend to think, at least in terms of skill if not resume. Completely outboxed and flummoxed Mercer before getting stopped in his tracks by that uppercut.... And Mercer himself was a good ol' Heavyweight in his day.
I think most of them pre-Dempsey get overlooked or underrated pretty often. I think Jack Johnson is very underrated. I think there are a lot more underrated fighters at lower weights.
Damiani was a really good fighter. His problem was he didn't like getting hit. As long as things were going his way he looked good. The moment he got hurt he found a way to quit. The reason nobody mentions his name anymore is because most people have this mind set "If people on TV don't mention somebody they want mention them".
