15 rounds, at middleweight. Who wins but what I'm looking for more is why would they beat the other, And how would this fight look.
Robinson's speed and mobility. In an out, side to side he keeps Monzon fighting at a faster Pace that he wants to. It would be a good fight and Carlos will win some rounds but I think Robinson had another gear. This isn't like Griffith or Napoles....Sugar had serious power at middleweight. Sugar Ray by TKO
wow … what a fight huh.. Hard to pick against SRR .. but this is Monzon territory a big middle.. Agree that SRR has the better movement and no doubt would be Monzon's toughest fight .. But he will out jab SRR and keep this at his range as best as possible with the 3 inch+ reach adv … Taking Monzon to squeak it out
Back in the early 70’s I would not give Monzon a chance. Carlos however made me a believer after dominating Valdez, a top grade fighter, twice. Monzon could fight 15 fast rounds, was as strong as all hell, a ramrod jab and a devastating right hand. I think he disrupts Rays rhythm enough in a fight Monzon comes back late in the fight to pull out the decision win.
Monzon was consistently better at the weight, however, I don't see him beating the St. Valentine's Day version of Robinson. So if that's the version of Robinson we can use, I see Ray winning a clear UD.
Agreed. I like Robinson up until his retirement in '52. Those lefthooks were like lightening. He could effortlessly rip off 3 or 4 in combination. Monzon being a stand-up fighter is gonna get caught with some of those.
Yep. I'd favor Monzon to last the distance but it is SRR and of course we are envisioning the best version that fought at Middleweight. Favoring an ex long term Welterweight over one of the greatest to fight at 160 just shows how insanely talented Robinson was.
Close ,close fight Monzon's jab could be key here ,and I think he could drop the right over Ray's left. I might pick Carlos by close decision .
Very hard pick as has been said. I pick SRR, just. He builds a lead using his superior speed and mobility but the King comes back in the later rounds behind that jab and right, just not enough to win it all. No KOs here I don't think.
We all know the potency of SRR's left hook, and remembering how the much smaller, Denny Moyer couldn't miss hitting Carlos with that punch, Ray would do the same.
The fight that makes me believe the Sugar man would win, Griffith 2. Though slowed down old man Emile landed right hand leads thoughout, was never tagged or hurt, and made the score close. Robinson threw and hit much faster and harder, for Griffith it was all a matter of timing, once Ray settled down I think he would start pot shotting and landing solidly on Monzon. Ray by close decision.
I would bet money on this one and you know what that means...Robinson a strong favorite because of his athleticism, not to mention his glaring edge in speed and combination punching - too many for Monzon to avoid. It'll be a contest for several rounds with Monzon's defense and foot work along with his incessant grabbing keep Robbie at bay but its just a matter of time before Robbie's pressure get to him Robinson jabs, hooks, and crosses Monzon into a tko defeat
