Weight bully is such a redundant term, virtually every fighter competes at the lowest weight they’re comfortable at. So a guy that makes 135 without issue should move up a division because he’s big for the weight, or he’s a bully? It’s a physical attribute like any other that gives a boxer an advantage. Should we consider iron jawed guys chin bullies?

 

How about guys that train hard as “work ethic bullies”.

What about tall fighters as “height bullies”. You know, like “Thomas Hearns was a height bully!”

 

Nobody ever said that the opposite never happens.

 

You'd have to be a moron to think Hearns having way more reach and height than his opponents wasn't the main reason he was so dominant from welterweight through middleweight. Skill was a distant third behind height and reach. He had an eleven inch reach advantage over Duran, eight inches over Cuevas and Benitez. He was fighting in the wrong weight classes half of his career. Him, Saddler, Hopkins, Foster, Michael Spinks, and Arguello.

 

There is no such thing as fighting in the wrong weight class. I get what you mean, but you’re wrong.

Saying that about Hopkins makes you seem like a hater. While Hopkins was 6'1, he had relatively short arms for someone of his height. He was usually at the reach disadvantage. Also, claiming he was some sort of weight bully at middleweight is just not true. The man often weighed in well under the middleweight limit, and usually didn't rehydrate much. Look up some of his fight night weights from his middleweight days. You will be surprised. He wasn't blowing up to 175 like guys do now. Middleweight Hopkins, was more along the lines of Rigondeaux in terms of rehydration. Hopkins had middleweight fights where he entered the ring under 160.

I doubt the accuracy of your stats. Echols vs Hopkins II, lists Echols reach as two inches longer than that of Hopkins 75" to 73". Also those are wingspan measurements. Not the same as reach. As I stated previously, Hopkins had shorter arms than most of his middleweight opponents. It also means that six opponents had longer wingspans out of the ones you named.

If I went back and looked at all the HBO tales of the tape before Hopkins fights, I'm pretty sure he always had the shorter arms. HBO measured arm length from the armpit to the tip of the fist.

Wingspan, measured from fingertip, to fingertip isn't an accurate method of determining someones reach. Backs, can be wider, or thinner, arms can be longer or shorter, fingers can be longer or shorter. Nobody punches with their fingers outstretched.

 

I'll be damned. You're right. Those HBO telecasts do relate Hopkins arm length as 23", Oscar's as 24", and Taylor's as 27".

Huh? Just checked the Holmes fight and they had Bernard at 71" and Holmes at 77". Then when I checked the telecast for Vanderpool it wasn't even HBO. It was on ESPN Classic Canada and they listed the reaches as 185 cm vs 191 cm. Deviltry and the metric system!
