Fair point on pulling out of the agreed fight. However I cant help think that doing so would have been the better move. Getting paid more, on a platform and with exposure magnitudes larger, in a fight he will be favored to win (and, if its semi competitive, perhaps gets a rematch out of it) All that can be down the drain if he loses this next fight now. Ive seen too many instances of fighters going from being at or near the top of the game, to the bottom, and losing the opportunities that come with that, in the span of a couple fights. I now believe fighters should act in their best interests if the disparity in opportunity is large enough... which I think it is here. Especially for someone like Kova whose nearing the end soon, and has been screwed in negotiations before. Imo he should have taken the fight. But... heres to hoping he wins next and this discussion is all for nothing as the Canelo fight takes place anyways. Or, not... lol.. not a fight I really care to see actually.
I'm sure he doesn't mind the rest and doesn't mind letting his country man and possible future opponent take the date.
Reading his response I agree, no reason for him to admit he was offered, then revealed the amount. Chance of court battles etc. Respectable response IMO: It wasn't too little, it was just too late 3 weeks away." Kovalev
No, he was rather furious. Anyway, his management team didn't offer enough at first to Kovalev, but then they realized their mistake and offered him good money but too late. So, the question is, is that a good management team? Or maybe Alvarez needs a better one? A team that would care about his, and not DAZN's or Oscar's, interests?
That's for Canelo to decide. Canelo has been extremely loyal to his team, after all his team got him to the very highest level in the ring and financially.
So... "Kovalev ducked Canelo, confirmed" for those of you that seem to always be sitting at the negotiating tables?
The Yarde fight was already set and the tickets were on sale. You seemed to ignore the fact that Canelo's side made the offer 3 weeks before the Yarde fight. Kovalev's side would have lost money on the Yarde fight and had to pay Yarde a nice step aside fee. And it's not a guarantee that Yarde would have agreed to step aside. The Kovalev-Yarde card is solid, and could have gone on without the main event, but it would have been a big mess to deal with. Easier to just go through with the fight and then see what's on the table again.
You forgot to mention that he also says that his fight with Yarde was signed and tickets were already on sale. Also, It’s been said by Warren that Yarde wouldn’t take step aside money with fight being so close, so the offer just came at a bad time.
Good. He's fighting Yarde. This whole idea of securing fights when other fights are occurring is BS. Scheduled mandos, yeah I get that. But signing to make a fight when he is yet to face Yarde is BS. Once the fight has taken place, then we'll see what gets agreed and what doesn't.
It was explained to you many times that if Kovalev would have accepted Canelo's offer he would have paid millions to Yarde as step aside money. And Yarde might not not even agree to that.
If Kovalev was indeed offered an 8 digit sum to fight Canelo and doesn’t take that after this then I’d consider that ridiculous and if I was Kovalev I’d be having serious talks with my management. That’s a generous offer for Kovalev honestly and if he doesn’t take that if the offers still on the table after I’d consider that possibly ducking
