I say yes. This wouldn't even need to be asked if he wasn't robbed against Andre Ward, but he was robbed. He was the most dominant champion of any weight class during the 2010s. Nobody of his era was that dominant of a champion. Until he and an Andre Ward fought and we all know how things go in Vegas. I can't think of any recent fighter who was cheated out his legacy more than Sergey Kovalev. But still a true ATG to me and one of the few modern time ATG's.
Yes definitely an all time great. He has been my favourite fighter of the past decade for not only how he fights, but also how willing he was to fight the top opposition. He never ducked anybody. I still remember the hip thrust mid combination against Cleverly in Nathan's backyard. Peak physical Kovalev at around 30 was so powerful and fluid and just bounced on his toes so beautifully. Now as has aged, he has had to demonstate tremendous heart as well. If the judges had given him the decision against SOG in fight 1, he couldve claimed possibly the most signifcant win in the 2000s (no bs).
No. His best win is Eleider Alvarez and he'll be taken out of consideration for the Hall of Fame as a result of being a shitty person. Ward beat him twice. I scored the first fight for Ward and trust the judges more than whatever on the fly scoring criteria fans use.
ATG in what, all time LHW rankings? I can see him maybe squeezing in the top 10... but ATG as in the top 100 boxers of all time? Not even close.
Hell yes he is! Prime Kovalev H2H is a problem for ANY 175er in history. Plus look at all his title defenses. And a great amateur career.
If Tito is an ATG then so is Kovalev. Sergey was the most dominant champion of his decade. He ran through people.
No. If a guy has a few title defenses now after coming back a couple of times they are said to be greator in consideration? It cannot be that easy. Yarde looks good but he is very inexperienced. Ward sort of outclassed Kovalev. Kovalev beat Hopkins. Alvarez is good but he did win. It is more what are Kovalev's biggest wins.. Does that make him great. I would say no at this point. He has a lot of heart for boxing and he is a warrior.
No, not for me. He's one of the best in this era, but not close to a all time great imo. Of course Andre Ward (who I had edging Sergey in fight 1) isn't either imo.
What about Golovkin? He was dominant. 23 fight ko streak. Kov is a bad dude, no doubt. I knew he would cone back after the Barrera loss. HOF'er no doubt!
