Is Canelo beating GGG a better win than anything on Monzons resume?

I know GGG was past prime but it isn't as though Griffith was in the first flush of youth either. He was a great, great fighter and still a very good one when Monzon beat him but considerably past his peak.

The same goes for Valdez and Benvenuti. It was impressive the way Monzon put Benvenuti down but he was definitely past his best by that point. Valdez had done his hand in and had all kinds of other problems as well as beginning to fade physically by the time Monzon faced him. Although Carlos himself was no spring chicken either, what with arthritis and the bullet to the shoulder lolz. A shame really that his missus wasn't as accurate with her shots as he was with his, in a manner of speaking.

I've criticized Golovkin in the past for being overrated but there's no doubt he was a truly excellent fighter at his peak, there's nothing wrong with saying he would've been Monzons best opponent considering where Monzons actual best opponents were in their careers when he faced them. Treating it like it isn't even a question because Monzon was a greater fighter, a classic fighter or one of your favourites is one of the reasons why this forum sometimes gets an unfair rep for old time bias despite actually being well-balanced.

    Tin ribs summed it up.

It's arguable. But Monzon is unquestionably a much greater fighter.

Maybe if Canelo actually beat GGG instead of getting a gift from the judges

If he had done it clearly yes but I felt he lost both fights even if they weren’t the worst robberies. Canelo is a drug cheat and even with that most observers felt he was lucky with the judges.

And Monzon would **** Canelo up. Inside the ring and out. If he wanted he'd have that sports car off him and drive to Argentina

    Depends how you rate GGG.

Monzon's best win was against Valdez. Who is better? GGG or Valdez?

But there is no dispute over Monzon's wins over Rodrigo, there is a big dispute over Canelo's win over GGG.

And what is GGG's biggest win? I think he is/was very good but not great. The fight against Canelo was supposed to elevate him to that level. But even if you think he won, it certainly didn't do that.

@Jel I'd rate the peak Valdez probably a bit higher as a h2h force than Golovkin tbh. He was better from the knees up in just about every way but didn't have the excellent closing footwork of Golovkin. And he was faded by the time of the Monzon fights. Interesting that you think there was clarity in both Monzon-Valdez fights, I thought Valdez had a case for winning the rematch in all honesty, it was a very close fight and I thought he outhustled Monzon for long stretches. Not a robbery by any means. Valdez was very unlucky throughout his career. Injuring his right hand in the crash, contracting hep A, his brother being murdered right before the first Monzon fight etc.
I'd agree that Golovkin was very good/genuinely excellent more than great but so was Valdez, though partially through luck and circumstances.

But who was the one that was really faded? Monzon was 3 and half years older and had 20 plus more fights deeper in the pit than Valdez .. And Valdez went on to beat Briscoe … Yes Valdez had his injury but so did Monzon

Canelo is better looking than Monzon though.

Well ... at least in the "before" photos ;)
