I recently watched the rematch between Miguel Lora and Alberto Davila. Was a very entertaining and much closer fight. However, it was ruined by the fact that Lora's corner put some kind of illegal substance in his water, similar to Pryor. Do you think Lora cheated against Davila and should have been DQ'd?

Very sad to see Davila leave boxing like this. Was very respectful throughout while Lora made a total ass of himself that night, showboating and drinking sugar water. But he was definitely FAST during his short prime.

Lora was a **** against an aged, way over his best weight Avelar as well.

Sugar water was quite a common thing in several south american countries boxing at the time, but yeah it was foolish to be doing it in America, which had tighter enforcement of the laws, well if a local fighter was on the end of it anyway.

Lora was really struggling with the weight those last few title defences, it would definitely have been an attempt to give him an edge, though how effective it would have been, i doubt all that much.He was investigated after it for banned substances and exonorated in a 4-3 verdict.

I actually thought he was fairly respectful of Avelar's power and did away with him in a quite focused manner. He wasn't exactly doing a Locche in there against a guy that could turn your lights out in an instant.

Avelar did deserve that shot btw, he had fought well and won a brutal war with Vasquez beforehand, though he was indeed past his best and above his best weight.

Lora was definitely a smug showboat though. Not the sort of fighter everyone will find easy to root for, though he wasn't on Locche levels of haminess, more Pea, Starling or Benitez type clowning.****in' egomaniac defensive specialists:lol:

    Bump
These days a fighter like Lora would be heavily criticized and likely banned for a couple months with people calling him a cheater. Always wondered why this was overlooked.

Another bump! Wanted to see if anyone has actually had the chance to check this fight out. This was actually a very entertaining fight upon rewatch with some nice display of boxing from both fighters.
Despite the fight being a nice scrap Lora’s smug gesture was really getting on my nerves and the sugar water still taints this victory. It really makes Gaby Canizales’ KO victory over Lora all the more sweeter and that karma was going to get to him at some point. :D

This was an excerpt from an article on Davila and what he had to say about the second Lora fight.

"It was time to retire. I wasn’t moving as well anymore and fighting flat-footed. But let me tell you about that fight with Lora in Inglewood. After the fight we all take a urine test and two tests are run. His tests came back dirty and dirtier. It makes sense how he fought me the first time. He just smiled and ran for 12 rounds. There were no tests run down there. He must’ve been higher than a kite down in Columbia. But the baffling thing was, here we are now in California, he tests positive and they didn’t do ****! I mean, why even bother running the test if you’re not going to do anything about it. But that was it for me."
