This is great: No Don King, no Frank Warren, just RJJ and Cal-slappy. Joe's "O" is about to go! Calzaghe is making a huge mistake as Jones is about to school ol' Joe!

Like above poster stated; great that no promoters are representing the match.

Still I will wait a while to accept that this fight is on.

Hopkins made Joe look bad, because his inside roughouse style negated Calzaghe's quick in and out flurrying style. Jones fights NOTHING like that. In his prime, he was also in and out, able to flurry and also pot shot with KO power in both hands (at 168). Jones is a shell of himself, and he gets hit a lot. I don't think he'll ever be able to set up a rhythm and will likely just stay outside and mug and run for half the fight.

This is a stupid fight. I think most people in the UK don't really grasp how shot Jones is. In interviews, it seems like he is flirting with actual dementia at this point. It's crazy how fast he declined, but it happened, and his crap fight with Trinidad showed that he has absolutely nothing left. The "old" Roy would have KO'ed him easily. I think this fight will be popular in the UK, but not anywhere else.

In the US, it looks like Calzaghe took his opportunity after opening the eyes of the American public to who he was and squandered it to fight old men who had clearly shown that they were well past their primes. I understand that he's winding his career down, but certainly there was a bigger money opportunity out there than Jones.

We could have had both fights. The plan was for Kelly to meet Joe at 168, and then move back down and meet Abrahama 160. Pavlik/Calzaghe could have been a fantastic "changing of the guard" on a par with Danny Lopez putting his head dress on Salvador Sanchez after their rematch; pure class. Just as a point of trivia, did you know that the Welsh people originated when a bunch of Britons refused to defend their homeland from the Saxons. They ran away from the fight, and became known as the Welsh, roughly translated as "the people over there." Joe can't help himself. It's in the water!

The fight doesnt particularly interest me to be honest. Calzaghe wins he beat a shot fighter, he loses he was exposed. At least if he fought Pavlik there would be a result either way.

Hope Calz loses to RJJ on this one. Then, he will realize that fighting (and losing) to a fighter at his prime in Pav is far more glorious than losing to a shot fighter...:yep

Good fight, and don't count out Roy in this one. Roy is faded, but he's not shot, he's still a legitimate top5 LHW right now, so this fight makes sense.
I'd still have preferred to see Roy rematch Glen Johnson first, but there's no money in that fight..

As for Pavlik, Pavlik-Abraham is the fight that needs to happen, not Pavlik-Calzaghe, so no problems there..

I don't understand why people are heavily criticizing Calzaghe for fighting Roy Jones instead of Kelly the Ghost. Hasn't everyone realized that Calzaghe has already answered the call of the harshest critics by fighting undefeated champions in Jeff Lacy and Mikkel Kessler. He also answered the critics by beating old Poppkins in Las Vegas. Calzaghe's attitude is basically, "when does this end...when will everyone be satisfied?" The answer is never!! Calzaghe has finally realized this fact of life...that you can't please the harshest critics of boxing.

If you're going to criticize anyone in boxing, be harsh on the Ghost for accepting a fight versus Sergio Mora, a fighter that couldn't punch his way out of a paper sack. Should we now conclude that Kelly Pavlik is ducking King Arthur for taking this easy no risk fight against a former contender contestant?

This could have been me writing this. I totally totally agree:thumbsup
The argument could also be made against Pavlik. If Joe is such a slapper and easy opponent, then surely Pavlik is ducking Abraham. Abraham Pavlik, after all, is, in my opinion, the most obvious fight out there.

Who can argue against that this is the fight that just has to happen. Abraham smashes a fit and strong (look at the prefight pics) Miranda in 4 rounds. Pavlik beat a weight drained Miranda in 5 rounds.

Is Pavlik running from Abraham ? What does he want with an old slapper ? Is Pavlik not a man of honour?

The fact is Joe Calzaghe, in his prime for absolutely drop dead certain, and even now, with 95 percent certainty, beats Pavlik.

Pavlik fans have just grown a little bit big for themselves recently.

Good fight for knowledgeable boxing fans, fellers! Calzaghe needs a technical and tactical challenge now, not a physical challenge. Jones is going to test Calzaghe more than Pavlik would have done, just like Hopkins tested him more than Kessler did. You didn't hear Calzaghe Snr. tell Calzaghe he needed a KO to win against Kessler before the last round, did you? Jones, like Hopkins, has the boxing brain to make it very interesting for Calzaghe. Pavlik doesn't. Even my man Jermain made things hot for Pavlik tactically in their second fight. Think about it, fellers!

Whoppee do da - Calzaghe is going to fight another OAP and claim greatness when he beats him.

Seeing as it doesent seem to matter whether fighters are OAPs and shot, just whether they have been great in the past, why doesent he get Hagler or Leonard out of retirement, beat them and show how hes the GOAT.

Hell, by this logic, if I beat a 2008 Ali, does that make me one of the greatest heavyweights ever?
