When a fighter beats another fighter and the beaten fighter goes on to have notable wins, credit tends to trickle up to the original fighter. Pacquiao defeating Thurman gives Floyd a boost to his legacy. But this isn't always the case.

When Kovalev beat Andre Ward in their first encounter, he was not given the decision. Ward went on to win the rematch, and promptly retired. According to boxrec, Kovalev is in his "down line"; carrying on and kicking back to Ward some of the glory. However, as time goes on, popular opinion seems to be in agreement that Ward did not win the first fight. The longer Kovalev is discussed, the more this sentiment is echoed, and while Ward's legacy is growing, so is the asterisk next to the first fight.

Kovalev has built a name, but not a huge name. The potential fight with Canelo serves to shine even more light on this infamous decision, and the "0" of Andre Ward.

I don't know. People think or rather almost everybody thinks Kovalev beat Ward. And they are not going to let it go.

It was the very least a poor decision. And given the fact that all 3 judges scored the 10th round for Ward and it was in America, its highly likely it was a corrupt decision.

That's my point. As opinion becomes solidified Ward is hurt. Still, as Kovalev becomes greater, he does gain something.

Ward's an interesting fighter in that he tends to get full credit for who his opponent's beat after he fought them. He might as well have Bute and Yarde on his resume to hear it from some people on here.

Alvarez actually KOed Bute and has a more impressive win over Kovalev.....yet no credit is due for what Kovalev did in the rematch.

No. Only butthurt idiots that can't get over the decision in the first fight think any of this trash. Also the second fight makes the first one moot because Kov got utterly outclassed and KOd in the second fight.

Ward's resume is like the boss of the family..the other resumes kick up to him.

it doesnt grow - we already know krusher is an elite, so beating him is an elite win.

but to see krusher krush yarde with a jab just shows how tough ward is.

There's not much Kovalev can do from here out to surpass Ward.

None of this makes much sense to me. IMO Ward beat Kovalev in a close first fight, but even if you think he didn't, he came back and knocked him out. Kovalev got broken down and destroyed in that second fight. Even if you think Kovalev was stopped unfairly, it still enhances Ward's legacy as he then had two close fights with a greater fighter than originally thought.

Every time Kovalev wins it enhances Ward's legacy. That's so obvious.

I had Kov winning the first fight but barely and yet I can agree with everything else you just said because its simply facts! I dont understand what's with all the excuses and hate on Ward by many on here. The dude is an ATG who beat a beast in Kovalev.

He wasn’t “utterly” outclassed at all, never have I seen a major fight stacked against one of the fighters, even with snake Jackson and Ward in cahoots.
