Hey guys I've recently been trying to watch more of fighters I'd not seen much of or I heard were avoided or under appreciated... So I started off by watching abit of winky Wright...... t as someone who only ever saw him fight twice and that was against Taylor and Peter quillen.. I feel I need educating... I've always heard he was underrated and very hard to beat and he has some great wins on his resume... What made him so good.... In a few of the videos I've watched in the last few days I have some observations.... He doesn't look particularly fast nor a massive puncher... He looks quite basic really.... This isn't said to slam winky... I'd just like someone to help me understand better what subtle parts of his game made him so successful and avoided

Good things I noted.. His jab is great and near constant, he judges range well, had a solid defence. Are there any other attributes that someone more learned could point out to me, what made him so good, who around his weight avoided him and would he have beat them, what fights of his should I watch to see his full array of skills... Thanks in advance

If you want a good start for Winky Wright watch his fight against Felix Trinidad where he basically shut him out in every round by using the jab and defense. Great boxing performance against a dangerous puncher like Trinidad.

Marlon Starling is another top fighter that had a high guard like Wright's that was near impenetrable. Both Wright and Starling were great with their defense and also came forward.

First, I don't recommend you watch any of his MW fights (not even against Tito even though it was a shut out). Those were the more stationary Winky, he was not prime and just chose to sit and catch way more. Winky was sometimes an up and down fighter, he fought to the opponents level. He could turn in some good outings, and he could be pedestrian.

I recommend you watch his fights vs. Bronco Mckart, JC Candelo, Robert Frazier, Vargas, and the Mosley fights. Those fights will tell you all you need to know about Winky in microcosm

He was ducked for a long time. He eventually began to move around less and rely more on his high, oyster-like guard where he would hide behind his gloves, forearms, and elbows like a shell. I think this transformation really became apparent around the time he fought JC Candelo.

He finally got his big break when he outclassed Shane Mosely. He under performed in the rematch in my opinion, which ended with a majority decision victory. He was flawless against Tito Trinidad, but after a draw against Taylor he totally lost his motivation, showing up looking pudgy against B-Hop.

Some of those guys who were ducked for years and years never lose their edge: Bernard Hopkins, Glen Johnson, & Marvin Hagler. Other guys do.

Good post and regarding Starling (huh?! unintentional rhyme)...yes a superb fighter; Don Curry's 2 hard fought wins over him show just how good Curry was before weight making problems ruined his career (pre early weigh -in much greater recovery and re-hydration time)....in able to edge Starling; but meant as a compliment to Starling as much as Curry-well it's a compliment to both. 2 wins over Floyd Mayweather are good too;)

Horrible match up for Winky. Would have lost probably every round against Calzaghe.

Watched most of his fight as they happened and he was a master inside the ring: One of the best jabs and his high guard was better than any border wall ever built by man
