Pure boxer (Davis) vs Southpaw Power Puncher (Ganigan). How do you see this fight go? Could Davis outbox Ganigan without getting hurt or would Ganigan be able to find his mark and drop Davis, possibly stopping him?
Might seem odd but I could possibly see a Ganigan decision here. Not because he's the better stylist or boxer, but because Davis had an unfortunate knack of becoming passive once he'd tasted the other guy's power and strength. He'd regularly concede rounds simply because he forgot to make the other guy pay after making them miss, or because he wanted a breather after taking some heavy shots the round before, so just stayed ineffective on the outside away from harm. Defending but not engaging. Davis' lack of an inside game is also going to be a problem here. It seems odd saying this, but I just have a hard time seeing him winning a lot of hypotheticals even if they suit him stylistically, because he was an expert in losing pressure fights which mattered or that he was meant to win. I guess it depends how long Davis can hold off the Ganigan onslaught, because it's bound to come eventually. If he holds it off until the last third of the fight I could see him holding on for victory, but any earlier than that and Ganigan probably outworks him or makes him wilt late on. I'll go with Ganigan via a scrappy points decision, but not with much confidence.
I know it was the amateurs, but Davis did defeat Aaron Pryor twice, and he was a much better pressure fighter, they never fought in the pros, but i would take Davis, he was just too fast and could stay away from the power punch of Ganigan, UD for Davis, Davis Beat Tony Baltazar and had a SD loss to Edwin Rosario, both with good power, Rosario with awesome power and both much better than Ganigan, so I would take Davis via UD
Davis SHOULD win by a comfortable UD, but he always seemed to find a way to lose bigger fights that he should have won. I'd pick Davis to win that way, but I could see him taking things too casually and walking into one of Ganigan's bombs and getting knocked down and thrown totally off his game.
Davis wins this fight by unanimous dec, after getting dropped, and roughed up. Ganigan was a heck of a puncher ( Dropped sturdy chinned Arguello) and a south paw. But as another poster noted Davis did fight better skilled punchers in Baltazar and Rosario without too many issues.
The Baltazar fight was actually very close and not devoid of some controversy. On the rounds system many had a draw and Davis himself said the scoring was ridiculous tho he believed he won a close one. Baltazar had some great moments. That's the thing tho, Davis showed on multiple occasions he could come from the canvas and win, The guy had great heart tho it;s not something often associated with him. I think your account of a bout against Ganigan is spot on.
