Ray Leonard was down seven times in his career. Kevin Howard Don Lalonde Thomas Hearns X 2 Terry Norris X 2 Hector Camacho
Officially by who? Tommy Rawson, the ref of the fight didn't indicate it was a knockdown at the time and when asked at the end of the round by the commentary team, we're told by them that Rawson confirmed it wasn't a knockdown and that Leonard was tripped. So who ruled it down as being an official knockdown? Did the ref change his mind after the bout and informed the boxing commission in charge of the fight of his decision?
I mean objectively it was good but according to this forum since Rocky Marciano's chin is mediocre cause he down twice in 49 fights, that means Ray Leonard's chin is glass for going down 8 times in 39 fights with better defensive capabilities. That or everyone here is a hypocrite
He ate some big shots from Hearns, who was freaky powerful and only went down twice against him, both times in their second fight, against an aging Hearns. So, a pretty stout beard on Leonard.
Between 1977-82, his prime active fighting years, he wasn't dropped once. I can only think of the first Duran fight where he was actually obviously hurt and wobbled. The knockdown against Kevin Howard was a flash knockdown and reflected his subpar performance. Everything from 87 onwards can be put down to age and/or moving up in weight. In his prime though, he had a fantastic chin.
