Joe Gallagher needs to learn the law of supply and demand. Callum Smith may well be a premium fighter but unfortunately, he is the Betamax of boxing.
Never realised Smith only lost once in the amateurs in nearly 400 fights. Double gold medalist. Fastest 3 weight world champion. Pound for pound number one.
Thought not mate. No I haven't read it either, which means I haven't got a clue what was actually written in it, which is why I'm not jumping to conclusions and talking like I was in on the negotiations like yourself.
Callum Smith should be comparing himself to Warrington, not Canelo. Warrington has been on PPV when he has had the right dance partner (Frampton) but otherwise he has been on regular BT shows. Warrington isn't complaining, and Warrington is a much bigger ticketseller than Smith
I have to say, sounds like Joe Gallagher is right in a lot of what he’s saying. GGG mandatory has just got $5mil funded by Hearn! He’s publicly throwing money round left right and centre. Offering Tank x amount, Haney x amount etc. You’ve got one of the top British boxers there you’ve got to pay him well. Hearn’s tactic is shocking and I’m surprised you of all people haven’t called him out for it! He hasn’t got these fighters on multi fight deals, the likes of Whyte (yeah I know), Price, Dave Allen, Callum Smith and god knows who else. So that when they lose he can just drop them. He needs calling out for it to be honest. It’s came back to bite him on the arse now because he’s expecting blind loyalty from the likes of Smith but now he’s expecting a bumper multi fight deal with a signing on fee like he’s offering these Americans. Joe although he’s wrong with the PPV shout is absolutely spot on about Smith’s profile. Sky turned Bellew from fighting in half empty arenas into a PPV star. They had him on SSN, Ringside, Podcasts, commentary. They haven’t pushed Smith on like they should be. Even the likes of Cheeseman with that horrific promo they done, Josh Kelly getting pushed to the masses, Okolie too. They’re pushing all these “prospects” and forgetting that they’ve got one of the top 5 boxers in the country who’s number 1 in his division. I’ll be surprised if we don’t see Hearn cave in and give him a multi fight contract and the promise of big bucks, probably a fight over in America on there too.
I think you underestimate the role that Bellew played in his own career. Whatever you think of him, Bellew can sell a fight. He talked and talked his way up the ladder, annoying some and winning others over. Callum is a better boxer and a more convincing champion, but he's not managed to grab people's attention or sell them a narrative in the way Bellew did.
He can and he did yeah I agree. However without the Sky platform to do it on he wouldn’t have managed it. Gallagher also makes the point of other fighters with no personality who are PPV stars and the fact Smith has one hell of a highlight reel to use to promote him.
If you can make sky more money than someone else then you’ll get the platform. The fact is Callum Smith can’t. We can discuss Hearn throwing money at world class fighters but they have a worldwide profile, no matter how good Smith may be, he doesn’t have that so can’t expect the premium pay days. Good for him for taking a break after the WBSS but it hasn’t been great for his career. You can’t habe your cake and eat it too...
GGG, Tank and Haney are very marketable in the US. They drive DAZN subscriptions. That is why Hearns is building them / offering them money. Smith would not drive and subscriptions on DAZN right now so that's why he isn't offered millions. It's that simple.
You’re right he won’t drive DAZN subscriptions but who's leading the UK market? Fury is over in America, Saunders is over in America next, Joshua been in the USA now Saudi, if he wins you can bet he’s over in the states again next. Just because he’s trying to take over the USA it doesn’t mean that he should neglect the British market. Callum Smith’s devastating power can make him a UK star. Put him in with Ryder, maybe over pay him and build Ryder up to be a top class opponent, once Smith obliterates him then aim for the PPV with Eubank, he destroys him as well. Then it leads you on to the Anfield PPV vs Saunders. It’s not hard to make Smith a star, regardless of personality.
That's exactly Hearns plan, give him another fight on Sky and then a big PPV in Anfield down the line. But Gallagher / Smith seem to think he is PPV now regardless of opponent.
Legend tells of a guy who fought in the little known Panamanian division a few years ago that no-one here actively hated. Then there was a rumour that his shoelaces were uneven length and there was soon a thirty page thread calling for him to be dismembered.
The ideal time to 'push Smith on' would've been on the back of the WBSS win but he decided to take 9 months out at a crucial point in developing his profile. He probably wouldn't change it for the world and rightly so but he can't have it all ways.
