Of course this wasn’t the 1919 Dempsey!

Not Really, my Dad before he passed was an old timer and many of his stories I heard him tell my Kids, were spot on from what I remembered, the same with several other old-timers I knew and some of their stories I knew to be true from my memory, to me those are the ones you can trust.
For example on another old time, Just Like sitting bull at custers last stand, as an old timer, I think he gives one of the best descriptions of the battle ever, and now years later after they've used technology to really track down the details of how and exactly where things went down, his story matches up better than any other ones. NO I disagree, these are the stories to count on.

It is pretty obvious, that most old-timers will say whatever it takes to make themselves, or their era, look good.

As an example, look at the nonsense Gene Tunney and Ray Arcel had to say, in an attempt to build up Jack Dempsey to unrealistic heights:

Are you saying, that we should just lap this up - and not read it with a critical/sceptical mind?
