He rated Archie Moore very highly as well, describing him as the best fighter in the world, while Marciano was champion.
Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster, Charlton Heston, Lee Marvin. They don’t make actors like them anymore. From a tough uncompromising different era than today. A bit like fighters like Marciano himself.
Lee Marvin the personification of a real man... of curse it was a different day and thats what a lot of people forget about past fighters, they had that mentality - toughness, resilience and driving fortitude to "just do it"... no blown out in the middle rounds, fitness, grit and just get up and get on with it today often if a ref doesn't stop a fight, the fighter himself will. mentality, attitude, willingness and NEED, even at the Top most fighters weren't making huge money, only the champions usually. Hard Times, Hard PEOPLE, especially among fighters.
No doubt they were as damn tough as they come but hell, man they looked old even when they were young. Would they get any work in Hollywood today as leading men in major films or are they as outdated and as out of place against todays top Hollywood leading men as Marciano would in todays heavyweight scene? Just putting it out there.
