Many times the age difference is quite small, but fans are often led to believe that age was a big factor. Marciano was two years younger than Charles, Ali two years older than Joe and Dempsey two years older than Tunney. Big deal! Comments? Thanks.

That was a sad one and age was a major factor in that fight.

Steve Ward (oldest pro) was 24 years older than his last opponent.

Fighters age at different rates , several factors must be taken into account. Wear and tear through fights and actual rounds boxed, lifestyles ,any prolonged periods of inactivity . For example Louis and Walcott there is little difference between them for age Walcott being just 4 months older ,yet Louis was clearly the" older man," when they fought.
When Charles fought Marciano he had 76 fights under his belt ,having fought 754 rounds.
Marciano was having his 46th fight and had fought 200 rounds.
Jack Johnson and Jack O Brien were born the same year, yet Johnson was in his prime
whereas O Brien was past his.
Dempsey was past prime when he fought Tunney, he had been living the soft life and had been inactive for3 years! Age didn't beat Dempsey, lifestyle and inactvity did
Fans of Joe Frazier will tell you he was badly diminished when he fought Foreman yet he was only 29,the same age as Ali was when he came back and challenged him.
I'm afraid you take a very simplistic view on this.

That this even needs to be mentioned is a bit depressing.

It's much more mileage in Charles' case, and time out in Dempsey's and Ali's cases.

Raw age doesn't mean a whole lot, some fighters peak in their mid 30's, other's have been shot to bits in their mid 20's.

Tyson was younger than Lennox when they fought, but Lennox was clearly the one near his peak while Tyson was way past it.

People say Lewis beat up on an old Mike Tyson but Lewis is actually a year older. Tyson was the boxing prodigy who peaked in his early 20's whereas Lewis was the classic late bloomer. Timing is everything though and the result could've been far different at various points in their careers. Lewis turned pro in June '89, just 8 months before Tyson lost the title for the first time to Buster Douglas.
