Reading through this article on the BBC website about Robert McCracken's comments about the first Joshua-Ruiz fight and the recent deaths in boxing: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/boxing/49679697 What past examples are there of fights that would have been stopped earlier if they had taken place today? And do you think there is any way to standardise stoppages as mentioned in the article?
Hopefully, fights like the Paret and Owen death fights would be stopped now, as well as non-fatal, but brutal beatings like C0oney vs. Norton and the Williams vs. Beau Jack fight above. All of those have clear "this fight needs to be stopped right now" moments. Others are not as easy to pinpoint, like Mancini vs. Kim.
Holy crap that was a terrible job by the ref. Machen was badly hurt and took some brutal shots from Ingo. Ingo's first fight with Floyd was pretty hard to watch as well. I want to say Floyd was knocked down 7 times in that fight. Ingo sure had a murderous right hand.
The accounts of the second Jeffries v Fitzsimmons fight indicate it would have been stopped under today's rules.Jeffries wasn't in danger of being ko'd, but his face was a bloody mess. Marciano v Charles 2 Rocky's left nostril was slit in half. We also have examples of lax refereeing today .Vitali v Briggs should not have been allowed to continue.Duran v Moore was a travesty.I watched Clarissa Shields v Nikki Adler yesterday that should have been halted earlier imo.
Basilio is stopped in that Robinson fight with that eye. Come to think of it, probably a few more bouts with carmen and that bleeding and swelling are stopped. What a rare breed to be all busted up and continue to dig deep in fights. Lots of the frontrunner types are not doing what Carmen would do & dig deep to stay in fights----I think we would have seen lots of mail it in type results.
Cobb/Holmes Bowe/Golota 2 Bowe/Hide Bowe/Thomas Holyfield/Thomas Possible: Bowe-Holyfield 1 (after THAT uppercut in the 10th round). And probably Tyson-Lewis, which was pretty much over after the 2nd round (if not earlier).
You got this in before me... Yeah the ref was terrible, to the point where Williams actually turned to the ref and said "what do you want me to do kill the guy". I dont think Williams ever forgave Jack for knocking his tooth out!!
