Qawi was a year older than Saad Muhammad but still an up and coming contender while Saad was a washed up champion.
Yes but Charles only fought for three of his first six years as a pro. At 21 Charles was 168lb. his record stood at 33-3-1. Then he was gone for three years. Starting again at 0-0-0 he went 55-7 up to fighting Marciano.
I've gotta ask a question, kinda related to this.,and which I'm not sure the answer is. Who was the first person Tyson fought who was actually younger than him? I know most of his opponents were older than him, even in his post bite fight s.
Cheers Tonto, I knew there weren't many older than him when he faced em. Suppose it's that youngest man to win a belt, I know he never lost a title fight to a man younger than himself, even when he was well past his best himself.
George Foreman won the world title in 1973 against Joe Frazier, lost it the following year against Muhammad Ali and retired in 1977 after losing to Jimmy Young. Larry Holmes didn't even get to fight for the title until 1978 so from that you would have thought that George would be a lot older than Larry but they were actually both born in the same year, 1949.
I wish Foreman would've remained active and not been retired for those 10 years. It would've made the division a lot more interesting in the 80's until Tyson came along.
Look another thread that is basically trying to make excuses for the old men Rocky Marciano fought as stated boxers age at different rates Foreman was in his 40s for most of his comeback and fresher than a lot of guys in their 30's. Ezzard Charles was a smaller man who probably had 90 bouts by time he fought Marciano. Charles was clearly done as "top" fighter.
