None of the current heavyweights are that good to point where they can't struggle with standard contenders on any given night. So people should stop going overboard when it happens.
I completely agree. What the last 12 months has shown is that they all have their flaws and are all vulnerable and beatable. I think this is why it’s a great generation of heavyweights. Not many results top10/15 against each other would shock you.
Did you not watch the fight? Otto Wallin took an absolute beating off Fury even though he was badly cut above the left eye in the third.
Apologies if already posted. The announced attendance last night was 8,249. The announced attendance for Fury v Schwartz was 9,012, which was 5,489 sold and 1,197 comps.
Only saw the fight this afternoon and had a few hours of driving / ruminating. Overall opinion is Fury was surprisingly bad in the first 2 or 3 rounds. He even grabbed the ropes in the first for no reason and the ref told him to let go. Wallin looked ok, but not much better than ok and maybe he's a top 20, but he's not thrown many punches and only broke 30+ in the 2nd, 5th and 12th. But he has landed a third more than Fury's nine previous opponents and he has bust Fury's face up badly while doing it. Tyson has got away with not keeping his hands up for a long time and Wallin has exposed that. Also the issue of the cuts; this is apparently the first time Tyson has been cut since 2010 and I went back to those fights but couldn't see who cut him on that occasion, so if anyone can confirm, thank you. I've seen a few fighters who've been cut and treated between rounds and then returned to the corner at the bell to have an oversized glob of vaseline removed from the cut. Tyson had swathes of it on and the ref ignored it, but I suppose he had the house advantage there. The cut looked rough enough for a stoppage.
Not making excuses here but I think many of us including myself are guilty of underestimating the effects of a bad cut. If the vision in one eye is obscured, judging range/distance is extremely difficult. It can make you feel weaker too.
If Joshua had received a similar cut, I think he would have looked for a way to quit. He isn't made of the same stuff as Tyson. Can you imagine Fury spitting his gum shield out, and backing into the corner and not coming out? His entire family would disown him. Tyson's been bred to fight from a young age.
Why did he quit against Ruiz? He spat his gum shield out and went back to his corner. Fury would never do that.
I think Tyson performed well considering but it certainly wasn't what everyone was expecting and I doubt he, Arum or Warren were expecting it either. Which goes back to my point, if Warren is talking of pushing a fight that's in over 5 months back further because of a cut is it because Tyson has bad slow healing and weak skin like Hughie or is there more to it ie. they don't want to risk him with Wilder again just yet? I'm not saying he has weak skin or that I think he's not good enough to beat Wilder, I just want to know why Warren is saying that.
They take a long time to heal them kind of cuts, bud. Proper deep that, feel free to correct me, but i’m fairly certain there’s actually two layers of stitching required on very deep wounds, deep stitching and surface stitching. He needs a 12 week camp if they are to fight on the 22nd Feb, which means he has to start his camp on Nov 30th. This only leaves 11 weeks for a deep wound like that to heal as he won’t be able to take any kind of blow on it. It’s unlikely to happen on 22nd Feb imo.
