yeah but he never fought a Hearns or Leonard at 147.. Not close to it. He handpicked good fighters, but no one of that prime.
I can't see how any "PURE BOXER" can beat Tommy Hearns...not Floyd Mayweather ...or Pernell Whitaker...or Luis Rodriguez. ..... This is the man who outjabbed Virgil Hill .
Nobody outboxed Hearns. Floyd isn't going to be able to get inside on Tommy without being in range. Hearns has not only height and reach but he is also quicker. Floyd would have to gamble and even if he does succeed he isn't a strong enough puncher to bother Thomas Hearns. This most likely looks like the Benitez bout. With Hearns dominating from the outside. Jab, jab, right-hand would sober Floyd up if he got frisky. If Mayweather misjudges one of those shoulder rolls he would find himself staring at the ring lights. Hearns has a 100% chance to win.
If Floyd adapts like Leonard did it would be competitive. One drawback for Floyd is he didn't hit nearly as hard as Leonard. But I can see him avoiding the Hearns right hand and taking Hearns into deep waters where his stamina at 147 was not great. Hearns best option is to use a game plan similar to the Benitez fight and outpointing Floyd while doing little damage, but setting his own pace. Floyd would have to adapt and get aggressive, leaving his comfort zone. So, I envision Hearns to win on points if he had the stamina.
His defense is too good to get smashed. I see this more likely playing out like the Hearns/Benitez fight. It's true Benitez was a bit taller than Floyd but Mayweather has the attributes to last.
No, he doesn't. Mayweather Jr's best fighting weight was Jr. Lightweight. At welterweight his punching power was below average. Unlike Benitez who was a strong Jr.Middle with height and power Hearns had to respect Their would be very little threat from Mayweather Jr. How many of those right hands do you think he'd be able to avoid? And How many truly great fighters that he fought that were in their prime that suggest to you he has "The attributes to last" with a fighter the caliber of Hearns? I'll tell you "0"and especially at welterweight. Mayweather Jr would get starched against Hearns. Believe it or not he would have a better chance ( though very slim) of lasting with Robinson, Napoles or Leonard. Hearns is simply all wrong for Mayweather Jr. Like Foreman was all wrong for Frazier.
Hearns would have turned Floyd inside out. He combined all the worst attirbutes Floyd doesnt want to face - skill, speed, huge power and ranginess - into one package. You'd be hard pressed to find a worse stylistic matchup for Mayweather.
I didn't vote because while I feel Hearns could win, I'm not sure it'd be by easy KO or even a KO at all.
