I thought Ben Davison was excellent again on Saturday night. When Fury was getting involved in the dog fight, in-between rounds, instead of just regurgitating the original plan (stay at distance, use the jab, all stuff you don't need to tell Fury) he decided to advise on what to do if he is going to go to war. Too often you hear a trainer just repeating the same stuff round after round, and the fighter isn't listening, or the opponent is doing something to stifle that plan. Davison showed he knows how to change up during the fight, as Fury does. Fury is no mug. He knows boxing, he is a real fan of the sport, is very knowledgeable. He trusts Davison, and you can see what a good working relationship they have.
I noticed he got a lot of stick yesterday. He is learning on the job, and to be fair he does appear to have an acute eye for the subtleties in an opponent. For example, he pointed out to Fury when Wallin taps his own head with the glove, that’s him resetting himself and gave Fury instructions on how to exploit this. I don’t think he’s the best trainer out there by a long stretch but I think he’s the best trainer for Fury. The dynamic has to work as the main challenge with Tyson appears to be focus, motivation, acknowledging and tolerating his unique behaviours...Something Peter probably couldn’t do.
John shouldn't have come out against him so publicly. What use is airing dirty laundry to the world??
This content is protected A likeable guy. I don’t believe he’s the best out there by a mile but he genuinely seems to care and have Fury’s best interests in mind. Seems to have been responsible for (at least temporarily) sorting out the mess in the big mans head. John Fury might be wise to remember that and keep his comments behind closed doors.
I too like his eye for detail, I think it's difficult for him because John Fury shoots from the hip and probably doesn't totally respect Davison partly due to his age. It's quite unusual for a boxer to have a trainer that's a few years their junior, especially an enigma like Fury. Davison hasn't really done anything wrong yet and deserves lots of credit for helping Fury get in shape, keep in shape and be as active as he has been. I don't remember him being as active as he's been since June 2018. For Wilder and/or Joshua/Ruiz I predict Freddie Roach will return. Seems there was a bit of upheaval this weekend and a few of the usual faces (Hatton, Agsy) weren't present. @Eggman will be able to explain better than me, but seems that Agsy is integral to their usual camp routine. He leads the prayers they have before the fight and was instrumental in sorting out that bouncy ring in the Klitschko fight. Disruption to routines and personnel are enough to throw someone like Fury off their game.
Ricky thought fighting again so quickly was a bad idea, couldn’t be bothered with another camp after Tyson and Gorman and has f.ucked off on a well deserved holiday. Ben is good, but again he’s learning. Iv been more distant with Tyson since I was with him at the pianeta fight. Since wilder and the $$$ things have changed a bit
Which is where Ben maybe should step in. If Ricky, part of the corner who is a massive calming influence on Tyson, doesn’t want involved and thinks it’s too soon then maybe Tyson should perk his ears up. Ricky thinks the world of Tyson but chose to holiday than to be in his corner because he thought it was far too soon. Maybe the dynamic in the fury corner isn’t what it seems. Ben does seem in control ON TV, but who really is in control?
Roach said a few negative things about Davison after the Wilder fight, saying Ben was being far too defensive and that Tyson should have got inside or at least engaged more. There may be some reasoning to that, since when he got clobbered he was moving back when Wilder had extention. Roach also mentioned another of Davison's fighters earlier on the card (can't remember who), saying the same, that Ben was being too negative.
Watched an interview with Tyson where he said he didn't need a coach or a boxing trainer as he said he already knows how to box, he said in the interview that the reason he work with Ben is because there is a connection there, someone who motivates him and he enjoys being around. Ben seems like a nice guy, but he does appear to happily take credit for Tyson's successful return, i question what he has actually added to Tyson's game apart from getting him in shape. I noticed at the fight at the weekend that when he was being interviewed during the fight by ESPN and informed that the cut had been caused by a punch and not a headbutt, the significance of this didn't seem to register with him, the significance being that Wallin wins if the fight is then stopped because of the cut. i expected him to relay this information to tyson and maybe change game plan to go for the KO or whatever but it was never mentioned in the corner between rounds, maybe that was intentional.
Yeah i think Roachs criticism was that davidson was giving two different fighters the exact same instructions.
Yes, that was it. And he said it on some talk show I seem to remember? Davison brushed it off and said they may get together again at some point, but the feeling I got was that what was said by Roach, while maybe not out of turn, was said in the wrong place.
Listen here, Davison is doing his best and doing quiet a good job but Tyson Fury is training Tyson Fury, Ben is a padsman
