Do the big heavy guys like Ruiz Jr, fury etc do roadwork? I suffer from shin splints sore knees when I run and I’m much lighter than these guys obviously im not a pro athlete I just find it hard to visualise Edit** Ruiz was meant to be in thread title but can’t change it now
Exactly I’m the same but guys like fury who go For 12 rounds no problem if he doesn’t do roadwork does that mean it’s not as important as old school guys say? If they do roadwork though there knees must take a hammering
It's been well documented over the years that Tyson Fury does running. There are tonnes of videos of him running along streets, up hills, stairs, beaches and whatever else.
I am a runner and shin splints can be managed like any injury I actually do some drills everyday to avoid them 30 steps on tip toes (Ballet dancer style ) 30 steps on your heels with your toes in the air 30 tip toes standing still repeat twice This has helped me and I dont get them anymore also it is good to focus more on your calfs when do you after workout stretches
I've saw a video of Ruiz jogging really slowly. There are many ways to skin a cat when it comes to cardio when you're that big. Wlad got by with swimming. Worked wonders for him for many years.
I agree you dont have to do it too fast for the right effect / return on training I watched Ricky Hatton on a film training near his house and his pace was nothing fast but you are training for fitness in a fight . IMHO as long as you put the required miles in a jogging pace you are OK I would also say that any heavier fighter should attempt to do the training on soft ground a canal / forest ect . You could run around the football pitch for an hour but it would do your head in
Tyson Fury: “Nobody’s an expert in everything. Even today, we’re still learning different things – new people bring different things to the table. I’ve stopped doing a lot of running. I used to do a lot of roadwork every day, and for someone so big it just smashes your knees to bits. By the time I’m 40 or 50, I’ll be in pieces. I use the bike and the rowing machine and the cross-trainer, which is non-taxing on the legs and the joints, and still gets the same cardio and your heart rate going."
Miles are overrated. Volume, heart-rate and good recovery is all that matters. Agreed on the surface. A Running Track is perfect, as is Astro Turf or Grass (Snow is a personal favourite. As long as you don't slip, you can go for miles and there's ZERO impact!). I'd still go with anything but Running for cardio if I was a CW or above. Too stressful on the body.
I was Mayweather do an interview where he said "I run at my own speed" I don't think it would be possible to go balls out every time without getting burnt out in a short period of time. Most of the elite level guys have probably been doing cardio for about 10 years by the time they get a world title shot. I remember Carl Froch said he felt like a semi professional runner as a boxer.
Regarding volume and heart rate is the key... what heart rate should be the target? What sort of volume, intervals long distance etc? I like the cross trainer as it doesn’t destroy me but I thought it was no good, anyone recommend any cross trainer routines?
